By the Associated Press.

a safe majority of gains, which, were
mostly small, howpver.

improvement, with gains of more than
η point.
German government issues were ac- 1
tive and strong. Italian. Japanese ]

WGE GAIN SEEN
IN SHOE DEMAND
Sales Expected to Increase
20 Per Cent Over Total
Last Spring.
BY JOHN A. CRONE.
Special Dispatch to The Star.
NEW YORK, January 9 —The trend
if shoe buying at the twenty-fourth
innual convention here of the Na
tional Shoe Retailers' Association
joints to a gain of 20 per cent above
J:at of last Spring, according to M. A.
Hittleman of Detroit, president of
:he association, and manufacturers
ivill not promise deliveries in less than
seven weeks.
' Retail stocks throughout the coun
try," Mr. Mittieman explained, "are
>o low that retailers are concerned
ibout deliveries. A survey oi the lines
exhibited by 700 manufacturers at the
hree hotels in this city, which is hav
ing this convention for the first time,
eveals &n optimism only exceeded bv
manners and leather dealers. With
-etail shoe business in 1934 fully 10
per cent more than in 1933. and stocks
low, retailers have the clearest out
look since 1929.
"Quality merchandise." he contin
jed, "is getting the preference these
Jays. Women have learnetj to econo
mize on items other than shoes, which,
when cheap, soon become shoddy.
Therefore quality merchandise is stag
ing a vigorous comeback.
"The association cannot give too
much praise to the Shoe Fashion
Guild of America, Inc., and its presi
dent, George Miller, for its fight
ι gainst style piracy and its encourage
ment of original creations. Within the
last six months the American shoe
industry has created more beautiful,
colorful, varied and youthful styles
than in any similar period that I
can recall." ·
