TULSA, Okla., January 26.—The ex tortion note which Phil Kennamer named as a primary factor in his slay ing of John Gorrell, Jr., here last Thanksgiving, was made public today by Charles A. Coakley, defense at torney. Written In a shaky scrawl, the note directs H. P. Wilcox, wealthy Tulsa oil man, to obtain $20,000 In small bills and hold it for payment as later di rected, under threat of "certain and painful death for one or more of your children.” Upon the handwriting of this note and its contents, the defense attor neys hope to build a large part of their case when Kennamer, 19-year-old son of Federal Judge Franklin E. Ken namer, faces trial February 11 in Pawnee for murder. Text of Letter. The text of the letter, which ap parently never was mailed: "You will secure $20,000 (twenty thousand dollars) in bills of the fol lowing amounts—ten thousand in 5 (five) dollar bills, five thousand In $10 <ten) dollar bills and five thousand in one dollar bills. You will be given further instructions later, either by phone or mall, by an operator who will identify himself by the symbol at the close of this letter. "Failure to comply with our demand will result in certain (underscored) and painful (underscored) ‘death’ (capitals) for one or more of your children. Keep the said sum in your Immediate house, for one moment's notice “You must secure the money not later than Friday noon. You will keep this money on hand, so that if you are notified in two days or two weeks you will save us lots trouble and yourself lots of misery. “Yours in expectations, "JOHN DOE, ‘‘Symbol—This is H. F. W. speaking. Strict silence, even in your family, must be observed." Claims He Foiled Plot. The letter was in a plain envelope. It was not dated. Kennamer has said that it was written by Gorrell in Kan sas City November 20. Kennamer's story was that he “double-crossed” Gorrell after pre tending to help him carry out the ex tortion plot. He said that pretty 18 year-old Virginia Wilcox was the in tended victim. The defense has had the letter in the hands of an expert in an effort to establish that Gorrell wrote the note. Dr. J. F. Gorrell, father of the slain youth, has clung persistently to the theory that his son was killed because he refused to take part in the plot with Kennamer. Paper on Studies in England. ATlantic 1700-1701 Paralysis Victim Enthusiastic For Success of Birthday Ball .. . ■ .... , I One of the most enthusiastic supporters of the President's birthday ball Wednesday night is Joshua Evans, 3d, who was aided on his return to health by six months’ treatment at the Warm Springs, Ga„ Founda tion. —Star StaS Photo. Joshua Evans. 3d, who himself fol lowed a bright inspiration on the road back to health, is anxious to do all he can to show other infantile paralysis victims the way. Young Evans has built up his physical strength to a remarkable degree in the three and a half years since the dread malady stretched him helpless on his back for more than a year. The I9-year-old son of a well known banker is now a sophomore at George Washington University, where he continues the studies he refused to allow his illness to interrupt. This year, as last, Evans plans to attend the President's birthday ball! Wednesday. Evans is known personally to the President, who saw him at Warm Springs, where he was a patient for i six months, and a year later in Wash ington found occasion to congratulate him upon his remarkable recovery. At the last White House reception for the judiciary. President Roosevelt again shook young Evans’ hand and expressed pleasure at his progress. Evans was about to graduate from St. Albans’ School when he was stricken. He continued his studies in the face of an appalling handicap. Today Evans is convinced he has mastered the illness, but he is far from forgetting the plight of other victims. "The public cannot realize,” Evans said, "the cost of treating infantile paralysis. It is a burden which few victims can sustain. The mere lack of endowed institutions for the care of such cases condemns many to the life of a helpless cripple, a burden upon their families and society.
