Progress of Symphony Is Exhibited in Last Concert After Four Years Washington's Orchestra Per forms in Very Satisfactory Manner With Difficult Compositions—Bauer as Soloist. BY ALICE EVKRSMAN. γτγ^ΗΕ last concert of the Thursday series of the National Symphony Orchestra yesterday seemed to demonstrate in a particular manner not only the technical gain of the A orchestra in this, its fourth season, but also Its fin?r sen sitiveness to the musical content of the numbers played. The performance can be summed up as one of the best the orchestra has ever presented, especially in the communicative sense. The aliveness of the performers reached out to the audience, caught a responsive echo and carried it along in a richer sympathy with their interpretations. There was a time when the orches- ; tra was not equal to a satisfactory ; rendition of two such contrasting numbers as the Bach chorale prelude, "I Call to Thee. Lord Jesus Christ." or the "Fourth Symphony" ot Tschai kowsky, but this was not the case yes terday. The impressive chorale, fit tingly chosen to commemorate the an niversary of the birth of the greatest composer of all time, was splendidly played with a special depth and no bility that seemed to stress the hu manity and the spirituality of the master as we have come to know him. The complete conviction of this •work of a man who was content with the divine management of things earthly was in sharp contrast to the j passionate questioning of the spirit ! of Tschaikowsky in his "Fourth Symphony." The restless effort to es cape the sense of the preordained, the pall of melancholy which shut out the light which Bach saw so clearly and the desire for some tangible as suagement of his suffering is expressed by Tschaikowsky with that passionate power which sprang from the strength of his feeling. An interpretation that misses the emotional elan or minimizes its desperation has lost the essence of inspiration which gave birth to his writings. The orchestra, under Dr. Kindler's sympathetic leadership, gave ff a superb rendition, lull or tempera mental warmth and psychological un derstanding. Innumerable small tech nical passages stood out resplendently as evidence of the artistic growth of Individual sections of the orchestra. while the sonority and vitality of the tonal volume was inspiring. The sudden illness of Sylvia Meyer necessitated a change in the second part of the program. The Ravel concerto, which the celebrated pianist, Harold Bauer, was to have Interpreted, could not be given and the lovely Schumann "Concerto in A Minor" was substituted. Mr. Bauer is too well known and too deeply Intrenched in the affections of the public of this city to need any introduction. His playing of the concerto contained that superfine sensitiveness, exquisite tonal color and ripe musicianship which he commands so abundantly. The enthusiasm of his reception brought him out repeatedly and to the final giving of an encore. Myra Hess' ar rangement of Bach's "Chorale." Mr. Bauer is a splendid artist and a master interpreter. Liszt's "Les Preludes" had also to be cancelled and in its place was given Wagner's "Tristan's Vision," from act III of the opera, and Smetana's "Dance of the Comedians." from the "Bartered Bride," as the concluding numbers.
