MRS. L. Ν. GELDERT, AUTHOR-POET, DIES Former Resident of This City Was Head of American Pen Women's League. Mrs. Louis Napoleon Geldert, 73, author and poet, former resident of Washington, died in Memphis, Tenn., of a heart ailment last night, ac cording to Associated Press dispatches. Mrs. Geldert lived here from 1918 to 1924 and was president of the League of American Pen Women from 1922 to 1924. 8he was nationally 1 known as author, poet, Journalist and lecturer. She was before here mar riage Grace Duffle Boylan. Surviving her are her husband and ! two children. Malcolm Stuart Boylan and Mrs. Clover Roecoe, both Hol lywood screen writers. Mrs. Geldert was the author ol several works, including "Thy Son Liveth," published In 1918 while she lived in Washington. This book dealt with a personal experience and physic revelation of a mother whose son died in Prance. ■ · Gains Cheer Greece. Greece reports that all branches of economic act ivlty showed an upward trend in the last year. MUNICH CLAIMED BY DEATH Superintendent of Nurses of U. S. Public Health Serv ice Succumbs. Miss Lucy Minnigerode, superin tendent of nurses of the United States Public Health Service, long fUstin guisned in her chosen profession, and a member of a Virginia family well known in Washington, died yesterday morning in Alexandria, Va. Her death, which followed a sudden illness in curred the day previous, took place at the residence of her niece, Mrs. Eliphalet Fraser Andrews, jr. Miss Minnigerode was born Febru ary 8, 1871, at Oatlands, near Lees burg, Va. She was a graduate of the Nursing School of Bellevue Hos pital, in New York. At one time she was superintendent of nurses at the Episcopal Eye, Ear and Throat Hos pital. in Washington, while during another period she occupied a simi lar post at Columbia Hospital in this j city. As chief of the nursing staff of the Public Health Service she was I at the head of a trained personnel numbering 1,700. Sent to Russia in 1914. In 1914 Miss Minnigerode was sent to Russia by the Red Cross, where 600 nurses were under her super vision. She spent a year in Kiev. Her lectures on hy gienic matters have been translated into several languages. Dr. Hugh S. Cumming. surgeon general <ύ the Public Health Service, said today that "in the death of Miss Minnigerode the Public Health Serv ice has sustained an irreparable loss." "She was a woman of outstanding ability," he declared. "Through her efforts the nursing corps of the Pub lic Health Service was organized in 1919. when the emergency care of World War veterans was placed on this service by Congress. "Under the direction of Miss Min nigerode a corpe of nurses of approxi mately 1,700 was quickly recruited and organized to carry on this im portant work in 76 hospitals. This emergency task, including also or ganization of the dietitians for these hospitals, was handled by Miss Min nigerode in a most competent man ner. She was a good organizer and a hard worker. "At the time of her death she was still superintendent of nurses, hav ing direction of 650 nurses in 26 hos pitals throughout the country, caring for merchant seamen, men of the Coast Guard, Light House Service ! and other beneficiaries, Including » few World War veteran*. Funeral services will be Held this afternoon at Vaucleuse, Seminary Hill, Va., residence of Mrs. Andrews. Interment will be later in the day in the family lot in the Mldaleburg, Va., Cemetery. WARREN B. HADLEY SUCCUMBS HERE Former Edison Associate Was District Electrical Engineer Until 1931. Warren Bernard Hadley, 75, one of the early leaders In the development of electrical utility, a former associate of Edison and for 18 years electrical engineer for the District, died early yesterday at his home, 2332 First street. As a youth, Mr. Hadley had done considerable experimentation on the arc lamp. He was an associate of J. Frank Sprague in laying down the Bos ton electric street car system, one of. the first in the country, and also did 1 work on early telephones. Worker With Edison. He made his first electric generator with Edison, and while working with the New York Edison Illuminating Co. was in charge of installing the first electric lights in Madison Square Garden. He came to Washington about 35 years ago to do work at the War Col lege. He stayed to supervise work at the Government Printing Office, and then for a time was chief engineer at Soldiers' Home, where he built the present elaborate power plant. Lnirrea υ. t. service. Entering the District service in 1913 as an assistant engineer, a short while : later he was put in charge, remaining so until the Pall of 1931. When he came into office there were 2.300 elec tric lamps in Washington. When he left, there was more than 29,000 Mr. Hadley was born in Providence, j R. X., September 2. 1859. He is sur vived by his widow, Mrs. Flora M. Hadley. and a step-son, Harry E. Edwards. Funeral services will be held at the home tomorrow, at 2:30 ρ m. Burial will be in Rock Creek Cemetery. He died Friday in Glendale, Calif., where services also will be held Wed nesday afternoon. Elder W. A. Prescott, general field secretary of the conference: P. M. Wilcox, editor the Review and Herald: W. H. Branson, president of the North American Con ference. and John L.
