Capital to Go Collegiate for
American Council Meet
ing April 3.
The Capital is going collegiate.
Bringing tosethrr representatives of
about 60 universities and colleges in
all sections of the country, the Ameri
can Alumni Council will open its
twenty-first national convention here
April 3. Already 45 have made defi
nite plans for the meetings, and 20
more are expected to fall in line, ac
cording to Maj. C. E. Lovejoy, alumni
secretary of Columbia University, the
convention chairman.
Among the most active groups are
those from the "Big Ten."
Dr. D. M. Follin, president of the
Washington alumni of the University
of Michigan, is lining up the Wolver
ines, assisted by James W. Follin, Col.
Thomas M. Spaulding and Ε. M.
Iowa Alumni Plan Dinner.
Judge I. M. Foster, president of the
Washington Club, is directing plans
for the gathering of alumni of Ohio
State University, and University of
Illinois graduates are being rounded
up by George S. Ward, club secretary.
Iowa State alumni have arranged
for a dinner at the Lafayette Hotel.
In charge of the Michigan State Col
lege meeting is D. F. Fisher, also local
club president.
Alumni of Columbia University will
have dinner at the Shoreham Hotel.
Col. Lester G. Wilson, club president,
and Alfred Anthony, secretary, have
arranged for President Nicholas Mur
ray Butler to speak, and others on the
program will be Senator Joseph C.
O'Mahoney of Wyoming, Senator
Francis T. Maloney of Connecticut,
and possibly Justice Benjamin Cor
Cornell University alumni will meet
at the University Club, where they
will hear talks by Henry Morgenthau,
jr.. Secretary of the Treasury; William
I. Myers, governor of the Farm Credit
Administration, and Dr. Sao-Ke Alfred
Sze, Minister from China.
Senator Glass to Speak.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia is
to speak to the alumni of Sweet Briar
College, of which his sister. Dr. Meta
Glass, is president. Mrs. Blair Ban
nister. Assistant Secretary of the
Treasury, another sister, also will
speak to this group, which is to meet
at the clubhouse of the American As
sociation of University Women.
Other institutions that have arranged
for meetings are Barnard College,
Bates College. Boston University,
Bowdoin College. University of Buffalo,
College of the City of New York, Uni
versity of Delaware, Women's College,

California Representative Indict
ed in Alleged Sale of Appoint
ment to Weit Point.
Representative John H. Hoeppel of
California, indicted with his eon by
the District grand Jury in connection
with an alleged conspiracy to tell a
West Point appointment for $1,000.
yesterday posted $1,000 bond to insure
his release pending trial. Bond for
the Representative was fixed by United
States Attorney Leslie C. Oarnett at
$500 on each of two Indictments. The
son, Charles J. Hoeppel. has not yet
appeared to answer the charge against
They are alleged to have accepted
a $1,900 note from James W. Ives of
Baltimore, in exchange for an ap
pointment to the Military Academy.
Navy Hero Given New Suit.
Hearing that Edward. Gable, an ex
navy man, had spoiled a new suit by
diving into the sea and rescuing an
11-year-old girl, the mayor of Hythe,
England, sent the man to a tailor
with an order for a new suit, the
mayor footing the bill.
