At Dayton, home of the Air Corps Materiel Division, hundreds of pounds of delicate scientific instruments, cameras and other equipment will be installed in the gondola under direc • ’ tlon of Capt. Albert W. Stevens and Capt. Orvll A. Anderson, commander and pilot chosen for the flight. The gondola then will be shipped to Rapid City. S. Dak., near which the starting point for the flight is located. The new balloon, now being con structed. will be far larger than any the world has seen. The bag,, now under construction at Akron, Ohto. will have a capacity of 3,700,000 cubic feet, as compared with the 3,000,000 cubic feet of the 1934 National Geographic-Army baUoon which burst and crashed in Nebraska. Many improvements. are being in , ■ corporated in the new bag as a resujt of experience .with the balloon of last year, up to that time the largest ever built. The most important difference is to be the use of helium gas instead of hydrogen. Helium, which can neither bum ncr explode, never has been used In stratosphere exploration.
