When the man monster warned that they might
be captured, Tarzan asked: “What do you suggest
then?” ‘‘In this wing," The Maker replied, "there
is an entrance to a shaft that leads to the cave of
one of my faithful priests. If we can reach it we
shall be safe."

"Very well,’’ Tarzan assented, “but I am going to
tie this rope around your neck so that you may not
escape me. And remember, I still have the knife
with which I killed several of your gorillas. I and
the knife will be always near you!’’ The gorilla
god made no reply.
With the rope around his neck the creature led
the way into the building and lifted a cleverly con
cealed trapdoor opening into the top of a dark shaft.
Tarzan allowed his* companion to precede him down
the ladder. They descended to a corridor and came
to a heavy door.

Tartan scowled suspiciously. He had the wild beast's
aversion to an unfamiliar inclosure. Perhaps this
sly creature was leading him into a trap In this
black underground realm. The ape man stood tense,
alert as the gorilla god raised the latch and pushed
the door ajar.
