IN D. Total Highest In History of Capital, Except for March, 1931, Peak. BY EDWARD C. STONE. With ore exception, aggregate de posits in Washington banks were the highest in the Capital’s financial his tory on the date of the controller’s last call, March 4, 1935, according to an analysis completed today by Audley A. P. Savage, auditor of the National Savings & Trust Co. Total deposits on that date amounted to $275,226,551.85 against an aggre gate total of $256,844,807.08 on De cember 31, 1934, the date of the last previous call, or a gain during that period of $18,381,744.77. On the cor responding call date a year ago. March 5, 1934, deposits totaled $245,453,910.94. The all-time peak was $281,977, 925.94 reached on March 25, 1931. The controller selected March 4 as the date of the recent call in order to show progress made by the banks since the Nation-wide bank holiday which was declared by President Roosevelt March 5, 1933. On the last call before the moratorium, December 31, 1932, deposits in the banks in this city totaled $255,194,596.13. On the first call after the banking holiday, June 30, 1933, deposits totaled $212, 902,324.15. the report made by Mr. Savage today showing how much de posits have climbed since that time. All the banks in the city but one reported deposit increases on March 4 this year over December 31, 1934. Several banks announced the highest totals they have ever had. As a group the national banks scored an increase in deposits of $11,524,535.49. the sav ings banks lifted deposits by $1,527, 963.46 and the trust companies pushed up their deposits $5,329,245.82. The reason for the gains is said to be due to the large amount of money on deposit which patrons are holding while aw’aiting more favorable invest ment opportunities. Bankers say the present totals are not likely to be maintained when investment interest 6hows marked improvement. Deposits on March 4, 1935. Profit taking was well absorbed and the majority of stocks reached their high marks of the day in the last hour, when the rails stepped forward to compete with the power group. Santa Fe, Union Pacific, New York Central, United States Steel, Chrysler, Case, Sears Roebuck and United States Smelting. The closing tone was firm. Transfers approximated 1,200,000 shares. While some buying of stocks from Holland and other European center? was reported, due to nervousness over the fate of the gold bloc, houses with European connections said this par ticipation had not yet become impor tant. It was apparent, brokers pointed out, that the slump of the guilder and the unsettlement of other continental exchanges had not particularly affected the American market.
