defer payment of interest due May 1
on its 4% per cent bonds, it was an
nounced today following a meeting of
the board. All other interest obliga

In connection with the deferment
of interest on the convertible 4%s,
Fred W. Sargent, president of the

invoke the 60-day grace period allowed
under the Indenture.
He expressed the opinion that the
road would pay the interest on the
bonds before the expiration of the

Calls Outlook Encouraging
as Phones Continue to
Increase Steadily.
By the Associated Press,
NEW YORK. April 17.—Walter*®.
Gifford, president of the American
Telephone Ac Telegraph Co., told
stockholders at their annual meeting
today that the number of telephones
In use was showing a slow but con
tinuous growth and the business out
look was encouraging.
More than 300 stockholders attended
the meeting and one of the first ques
tions asked Gifford was the amount of
his salary. He replied that his annual
compensation was $206,250 and that
no bonuses were paid.
Questioned by another stockholder
regarding the agitation for lower rates,
he said in his 31 years in the tele
phone business he could not recall a
time when lower rates were not being
agitated.
"There is nothing particularly ab
normal about the telephone rate situ
ation today," he said. “The company
would like to make lower rates, and
when ways and means can be devised
they will be put into effect.”
He disclosed In response to further
questioning that A. T. Ac T. was giving
serious consideration to the question
of refunding Its bonds, and that
"something may be done.” If all Is
sues were placed on a 314 per cent
basis, however, he said, It would save
only 15 to 20 cents a share on the
outstanding stock, an amount Insuffi
cient fundamentally to affect dividend
policies.
Regarding the business outlook, he
added, “The Bell system Is now gain
ing stations in practically all sections
of the country. In the first two weeks
of April there was a net gain of 22,500
stations.”
Chicago Grain.
By the Associated Pres*.
CHICAGO. April 17—Unexpected
strength developed in com late to
day, and prices climbed to a new
high record aince January, but abrupt
ly reacted owing to wheat weakness.
May delivery of corn took the star
role as a result of focusing of trade
attention on unusual scantiness of
Chicago stocks of corn needed for
settlement of May contracts. Spread
ing operations in wheat between here
and Kansas City accounted largely for
wheat weakness.

FERS BUDWEISER...
WEBSTER’S
DICTIONARY
DEFINES IT
and its taste tells
you why
BUDWEISER must be famous indeed
to be chosen from all American beers
for mention in Webster’s New Inter
national Dictionary, just published.
You’ll find it on Page 349.
Here is just another distinction for
the fine beer that has won medal after
medal at world’s fairs for more than
half a century. Bohemia, in 1903,
officially adjudged BUDWEISER the
finest bottled beer on Earth, better
even than native brews. France, as
early as 1882, conceded BUDWEISER’s
superiority. The following is from the
Paris Gazette:—
“ The most surprising triumph for
an American product at the Paris
Exhibition was the success of the
Anheuser-Busch Brewing Asso
ciation, of St. Louis, which
eclipsed world-renowned English
brewers, as well as hundreds of
rivals from Austria and Bavaria.
It is not surprising that a great
sensation was produced when it
was understood that the experts
reluctantly pronounced the St.
Louis beer *superior to any malt
liquor ever drunk upon the con
tinent,* and that all Paris is now
seeking to quaff the American
nectar.**
