By the Associated Press. SAVANNAH. Ga., May H—Pleas ant A. Stovall, editor of the Savannah Evening Press and former United States Minister to Switzerland, died today. The 77-year-old editor had been in poor health for some time. He died at his residence here. Long one of Georgia's prominent figures in Journalism, Stovall began his newspaper career after graduating at University ol Georgia in 1875. He ; started as a reporter on the Athens, | Ga., Banner, later Joined the staff of 1 the Augusta Chronicle and shortly be ; came associate editor of the Chronicle. He established the Savannah Press here and continued lta sole owner for many years until January, 1931, when he sold it to H V. Jenkins of the Savannah Morning News. 8tovall con tinued as its editor. A boyhood schoolmate of Woodrow Wilson at Augusta, Ga., Mr Stovall and the war President were close friends for years, and when the World War came President Wilson sent him to Switzerland as Minister. From 1913 to 1920 Mr. Stovall re mained at his diplomatic post, serving during the trying war and post-war periods as adviser on questions of neu trality, and aided refugees who flocked to Switzerland In recognition of his humanitarian work the Belgian gov ernment presented him a gold medal. May 14—Plana for the funeral of Maj. John S. Cohen, 65, prominent editor and vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee, were delayed today pending the ar rival of his daughter from Europe. The daughter, Mrs. Jean M. Bien venu of Lisbon, Portugal, will arrive in New York tonight with her hus band and children. Maj. Cohen’s death at his home last night closed a career that carried j him from a reportorlal position to the presidency and editorship of the Atlanta Journal and to a short term I In the United States Senate. He had been ill for a long period j Only last week he returned from Rochester, Minn., where he had gone for treatment of a stomach ailment. Roosevelt Expresses Sorrow. At his bedside when he died were his wife, the former Julia Lowry Clarke; a son, John 8. Cohen, Jr., of New York, and his sister. Mrs. Barton Haxall Wise of Richmond. Va. President Roosevelt, a friend of Maj. Cohen, led high officials in expressions ' of sorrow. Postmaster Oeneral James A. Farley paid tribute to him as ’’one : | of the great editors of the country | | and a most useful citizen and leader ! ! In his State.” Maj. Cohen had. been Democratic i national committeeman from Georgia ! since 1924. As head of the Georgia delegation I that year he and other leaders of the William G. McAdoo forces battled Al fred E. In the same year he was appointed to the United State Senate to fill the vacancy left by the death of Senator William J. Harris. He had won his military title In the Spanish-American War. Messages of sympathy from persons high in governmental circles sped to Atlanta on receipt of word of the death of Maj. John S. Cohen, pub lisher of the Atlanta Journal and vice chairman ot the Democratic National | Committee President and Mrs. Roosevelt sent ; messages of deepest sympathy to Mrs. Cohen and the family. Postmaster General Farley, his im mediate chief in Democratic party councils, also dispatched a message of deep sorrow. “I am terribly shocked to learn of the death of Maj. Cohen." Farley said, j “He has been a close personal friend of mine for many years. His services to the Democratic party for upward of 40 years are known and appreciated throughout the United States.” Another tribute came from Harlee Branch, Second Assistant Postmaster General and former Washington cor respondent for the Atlanta Journal. Lizzette Krumm Baer, 80. widow of Nathan Baer, former Capitol guard in charge of the diplomatic gal lery of the Senate, died today at her home, 108 Flower avenue, Takoma Park. Born in Baltimore, Mrs. Baer lived there until she was married more than 50 years ago in Christ Church, Alex andria. She lived thereafter in San Diego and New' York before coming to this city. The couple at one time operated delicatessens on Pennsyl vania avenue southeast and in the 900 block of Tenth street. Mrs. Baer was a charter member and former lieutenant commander of the Women's Benefit Association, Order of the Maccabees. She is survived by two sisters. Mrs. Nettie Bosch and Mrs. W. E.
