CHURCH 10 MARK SIXTIETH TEAR Eastern Presbyterian to Open Week of Special Events Tomorrow. The sixtieth anniversary of the organization of the Eastern Presby terian Church will be celebrated by a week of special events, beginning to morrow at 11 am., when the pastor. Dr. Alfred E. Barrows, will preach. The music will \e by the chorus choir, directed by Charles W. Guest, with Miss Nellie Sacrey, organist. The eve ning service will be under the auspices of the Men's Bible Class. Carl Broo man, former Assistant Secretary of Agriculture, will be the speaker, and the male chorus of the men's class, directed by Enoch R. Burns, and Prof. J. Colburn Beall, pianist and organist. Will have charge of the music. Monday evening will be Fraternal evening. The address will be made by Rev. R. Paul Schearrer, moderator of the Presbytery of Washington City. Others who will extend greetings are Dr. W. L. Darby, executive secretary of the Federation of Churches; Dr. James D. Buhrer of the First Re formed Church; Dr. H. M. Canter of the Ingram Memorial Church, Dr. James H Taylor of the Central Pres byterian Church and Dr. Shera Mont gomery, chaplain of the House of Rep resentatives. Music will be rendered by the chorus choir. Tuesday evening will be the Histor ical evening. Charles L. Loughery pre siding. The young men will present a sketch, reproducing the early begin ning of the church. Other historical events will be reviewed and illustrated by lantern slides. The song. The world-wide friendships of East ern Church will be expressed in letters which have been received from Dr. William Chalmers Covert, moderator of the General Assembly of the Pres byterian Church of the United States of America; Toyohiko Kagawa of To kio, Japan; Dr. Will Dobson, a medi cal missionary in China, who went to the foreign field from the church; Dr. Sam Higginbottom of India, and others. Wednesday evening, the “History Makers of Today and Tomorrow," Del bert O. Osborne will preside. The organizations of the church will show their part In the church work in origi nal wavs. A social will be held Thursday. Horace C. Wilcox will preside. George A. Myers will be the soloist. The birthday gifts which many of the organizations and friends are plan ning to present will be announced. The closing exercises will be May 26. At 11 o'clock. Representative Jennings Randolph of West Virginia will make the address. The evening service will be a special musical service, when the rhorus choir will render "The Holy City," by Gaul. The quartet consists of Miss Dorothy Reddish, soprano; Miss Sue Hess, contralto; Eugene Dahl, tenor, and Douglas Shaver, bass. Organized in 1871. The church was organized in 1871. The Sunday school was started in the home of Mr. and Mrs. James Hughes, 1016 H street northeast, with Fer nando Cate as superintendent, R. H. Leipold assistant superintendent and B. H. Warned secretary and treasurer. A chapel was built on Eighth street, between F and G streets northeast, In 1872. Joseph T. Kelly, a student from Princeton University, accepted an invitation to preach-each Sunday. He later became pastor of Fourth Church. The church was formally or ganized May 19, 1875, with a mem bership of 33. William T. Betts and Edward H. Betts, charter members, are still living. The present edifice at Sixth street and Maryland avenue northeast was begun during the pas torate of Dr. Maxwell N. Cornelius. The corner stone was laid April 16, 1892. It was completed during the pastorate of Dr. Thomas C. Easton. Dr. T. De Witt Talmadge preached the sermon at the opening service. The following pastors have served the church: Dr. George B. Patch, Rev. R. S. Wallen. 1882-1883: Rev. Eugene Peck. 1884-1888; Dr. T. K. Noble, 1888 1889; Dr. Maxwell N. Cornelius, 1890 1893; Rev. G. R. Alden, associate from 1891 to 1893; Dr. Thomas E. Easton, 1893-1907; Rev. Charles L. Neibel, 1908-1912. and Dr. Alfred E. Barrows, the present pastor, since December 1, 1912. FIRST BAPTISTS WILL HEAR GUEST It. W. Gibbon of “The Gideon*” to Be Speaker Tomorrow Morning. In the absence of Dr. Rufus W. Weaver, who Is attending the South ern Baptist Convention in Memphis, Tenn.. the pulpit of the First Baptist Church will be occupied tomorrow morning by Ralph W. Gibbon of Philadelphia. Pa., a prominent mem ber of "The Gideons,’’ who are in con vention here. In the evening there will be a mu Bical program by the choir, under the direction of Raymond E. Rapp, organ ist and choir leader. Alice Wilson and a group from the Eusellan Class will visit the Children's Emergency Home of Central Union Mission and present a program today. Thursday evening Margaret Wilder and a group from the B. Y. P. U. will conduct services at Gospel Mission. Dr. Weaver and other delegates to the Southern Baptist Convention at Memphis will report on the subject at the devotional meeting next Thursday evening. PENTECOSTPLANS MADE BY CHURCH Representative of Gideon Society to Speak at Grace Lutheran Sunday School. Service* preparatory to the coming of Pentecost, emphasizing the growth and larger work of the church, are being held at Grace Lutheran Church. Tomorrow, at 11 e.m., the pastor, Rev. Gerhard E. Lenski. will preach on "Serving Him Whom We Do not See." In connection with the Sunday School, an address will be given by a representative of the Gideon Bible Society. Women of the congregation and of other local Lutheran churches will attend a missionary conference in St. Mork's Lutheran Church, Baltimore, on Thursday, 2 and 8 p.m. The young people will present a play in the hall of the church on Fri day at 8 p.m. The play, a comedy, entitled “Her Temporary Husband,” is being directed by Harry Crow.
