In utility shares overshadowed other
developments on the Curb Market to
day.
Reports from Washington indicate
lng a strong stand would be taken by
the House in holding company legisla
tion brought about a substantial cov
ering movement In leading power and
light shares as well as buying for long
account.
Trading was more active in the final
hour.
PLANT TO FiLL ORDER
FOR 500 STEEL CARS

RICHMOND. Va., July 26.—A mil
lion dollar order for the construction
of 500 steel cars for the Norfolk
Southern Railroad Co. will be filled
bv the Richmond plant of the Pull
man Standard Car Manufacturing Co..

BY RETAIL TRADE
Additional Gains Registered
Despite Heat—Buying
for Fall Pushed.

NEW YORK. July. 26 — Additional
gains were registered for retail trade
during the week. Dun & Bradstreet
reported today In a weekly trade re
view, in spite of high temperatures
which prevailed in nearly all parts of
the country.
“Instead of being forced to offer
resistance to the awaited Midsummer
recession, most divisions of trade have
been enabled to better their showing
of a year ago without much effort,”
It was stated.
“Fall buying at wholesale also made
more headway, as retailers advanced
their earlier budget estimates, in view
of the improved outlook. • • *
"The steady broadening of consumer
demand since the first of the month
! is proceeding unmindful of weather
conditions, the postponed buying of
May and a part of June being released
i in larger volume with each successive
week.
"Losses of the Spring months rapid
j ly are being nullified, as Summer
| stocks dwindle and early Fall lines
commence to attract attention.
"Because of the continued heat
wave, hot-weather Items headed tha
list of best sellers. • • •
"Although dally totals fluctuated
with the weather, the intense heat
interfering with planned shopping
tours at times, retail sales for the
country were estimated at It to 3i
per cent ahead of those for the cor
responding 1934 week.”
Wholesale markets reflected tha
broadening trend of retail distribution,
it was declared, and the broadening
of industrial operations, which started
two weeks ago, contrary to all ex
pectations for this period, has been
further extended, and rapidly is out
stripping all records for the last few
years.

American Oil Company, the Chairman of the
Board made, a request. He said: “Gentlemen, I want
to talk a few minutes on a subject very close to my
heart. You know, next year—in July 1935 —we
celebrate the 25th Anniversary of our company.

“As we look back at our small beginning and the
progress made in 25 years, we should realize one thing.
We owe much of our growth to the motorists who
bought and liked our products. I feel, in celebrating
our anniversary, we should do something that further
merits the continued support of those motorist friends.
“We have a new refinery that’s the last word in
every respect. Our chemists have a lot of new ideas.
Let us put both refinery and chemists to work on some
new things. Let’s first try to improve Amoco-Gas—if
that is possible. And then let us bring out a new
regular gasoline — something modern, different from
and ahead of any other regular gas on the market
“Perhaps we will be asking a lot; I imagine most of
our people think we are turning out just about the
best products it is possible to produce. But for this
important 25th Anniversary year, let us strive still
further to better both of these products.”
