ROBERTS HITS JURY DUTY RESISTANCE Says Firms Which Fight Call of Employes Im peril Justice. Private business executives who re sist selection of their employes for Jury service were taken to task yes ter day by People’s Counsel William A. Roberts during discussion of the new act of Congress, which enlarge!? the field of eligibles for Jury service in the District. Thousands of Washington residents in Government service will be avail able for jury duty for the first time at the present, session of court, he said, in an address bioadcast late yes terday over Station WOL. "Congress specified that when Gov ernment employes in executive service sit on a jury they shall not receive the usual jury fee. but shall receive their regular compensation from the de partments in which they are em ployed." he explained. "This was done as a good example to private employers who only too fre quently resist the service by their em ployes on juries. These short-sighted private employers fail to rlalizc that good juries are vital to the cause of justice to which they themselves are often indebted. "This important law will increase the available number of jurors for service in our local courts by many thousands and will assure a better type of juror than has been available heretofore.” The old law had been construed to exclude employes of the United States and District governments of all ranks and classes of service, he continued. The new law provides that other than lawyers, clergymen, practicing physi cians and such classes of services as are normally excluded from jury duty because of their occupation still are exempt. "But. only the executive and judicial officers of the United States and District governments and mem bers of the armed services of the United States and of the Police and 1 Fire Departments are excluded under the new law," Roberts added. This means that Government em , ployes and National Guard and Re | serve officers and ethers heretofore | disqualified on the theory they were j beneficiaries of the Government by reason of a pension or similar gra tuities shall not be exempt from jury duty, he concluded. ■-•-— Dvffryn is the name of a village in Wales.
