January 15—Walter S Gifford, president of the American Telephone & Telegraph Co., in a notice today to stockholders, stated preliminary data indicate consolidated earnings applicable to A. T. & T. stock were $7 a share in 1935, com pared with $5.96 in 1934. The Bell System had a net gain of about 460.000 telephones during the * past year, compared with 298,000 in 1934. There were about 13.845,000 tele phones in service as of December 31, 1935 or 3.5 per cent more than on December 31, 1934, but 1.2 per cent less than the maximum development reached in 1930, Gifford declared. NEW YORK. January 15 —Earnings of the Guaranty Trust Co. of New York dropped to $12,795,815 in 1935 from $20,992,304 in the previous year. W. Palen Conway, president, revealed at the annual meeting. "This comparison shows with drastic emphasis," Conway told stockholders, “the combination of increased bank deposits and the curtailed use of them by commerce, industry and agricul ture." The Irving Trust Co. revealed to shareholders that 1935 earnings, for similar reasons, had barely covered the 60-cent annual dividend requirement. In 1935 Irving Trust earned $3,150, 930. equal to 63 cents a share, com pared with $5,713,109, equal to $1.14 a share, in 1934. FOREIGN INTEREST GAINS. NEW YORK. January 14 OP).— United States . Steel Corp. disclosed that 504,660 shares of its common stock, or 5.80 per cent of the total, were held abroad by foreign investors at the end of December. NEW YORK, January 15.—Electric power output for the week ending January 11 was 1,970.518,000 kilowatt hours, a gain of 6.2 per cent over last week and 11.2 above ’he same week a year ago,' the Edison Electric Institute indicated today. The Associated Press index of elec tric power production, with 1929-30 as 100, declined for the week to 105.4 from 105.5 the previous week and compares with 98.4 a year previously. Sargent, president of the Chicago & Northwestern Railway Co., an nounced today that a plan for re organization will be filed February 27 with the Federal Court in Chicago and the Interstate Commerce Com mission. Sargent declared directors will con sider principles of the plan today and that a committee to be named by the directors would work out details next month.
