BY VICTOR EUBANK, Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, February 27—A final burst of activity today in the stock market carried prices onward at the close from high levels achieved during a quiet early session. Steels, rails, non-ferrous metals and a broad list of industrial specialties climbed higher by 1 to 3 or more points. The closing tone was strong and transfers approximated 2,350,000 shares. The hand of the professional trader was seen in the market, since the small volume indicated a restricted public participation. At the same a time, brokers declared London in- * terests were buying securities on bal ance in the New York market. The bond market was steady to firm throughout the day, and most Japa- ! nese obligations were slightly lower. Grains and cotton were irregular, with price changes narrow. The dollar was steady against leading foreign ex changes. Among the best gainers in the stock market were United States Steel, i American Water Works, Western Union, New York Central. Delaware & j Hudson, Pennsylvania, Chrysler, Allied Chemical, Westinghouse Electric. Elec tric Auto-Lite. Standard Oil of New Jersey and California. Amerada Corp., j Johns-Manville, American smelting, i St. Joseph Lead, Anaconda, Interna* tional Nickel and Republic Steel. Na* * tional Lead was up nearly 40 points. New York Cotton By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. February 27.—Cotton I was quiet today and prices moved rather irregularly within a compara* tively narrow range. After selling at 10.77 at the start May eased off to 10.73 and was ruling around 10.74 in the midafternoon market when March was holding about 2 points net higher. February 27.—Higher prices on May wheat but lower on new \ crop months. July and September, formed the rule in late dealings today. A feature was purchases of May ' against sales of deferred months. The fact that low temperatures Vere less severe today than many traders had expected and that there was a let-up in dust storms was a basis for selling of July and September. ] Wheat closed irregular, 5g off to 3g * up. compared with yesterday's finish.
