SHORT WORK WEEK
BILL HAS NO HOPE
Connery, Its Backer, Says Leaders
Won’t Go Along in Elec
tion Year.

Forces backing the Black-Connery
SO-bour week bill saw little chance
' today for its enactment this year.
"Because It's election year. It will be
hard to get the leaders to go along,”
said Representative Connery, Demo
crat, of Massachusetts, who has led
the fight for a shorter work week for
the last five years.
“It doesn’t look good for this year,
but it will go through flying as soon
as we get back next year if Presi
dent Roosevelt is re-elected.”
American Federation of Labor repre
sentatives privately indicated, too, that
they felt the bill would stay on the
shelf for the present session. They
said, however, that they Intended to
keep up their fight for enactment.
The bill would require that em
ployes engaged In interstate commerce
or contracting with the Government
work their employes no more than 30
hours a week, with certain exceptions.
Heated Bullet Kills Woman.
CHICAGO OP).—Mrs. Elizabeth
Koch burned some rubbish in a bon
fire. There was an explosion and a
flying fragment of metal severed her
juglar vein. Police Lieut. Patrick
Knox, investigating ner death, learned
she was killed by a blank rifle cart
ridge, a World War souvenir, exploded
by the fire.

Chicago Dental Society Finds De
sensitizer Solution Successful
in Many Cases.

CHICAGO, February 2S.—The new
tooth pain killer developed by Dr. Le
Roy L. Hartman of Columbia Univer
sity has been accepted by the Chicago
Dental Society as having "a definite
place In dental practice’* on the basis
of 23,276 cases reported by 8,000 den
tists from 42 States and Canada.
Dr. Edward J. Ryan, president of the
society, announced that in 6,965 cases
reported by dentists answering a ques
tionable during the recant seventy
second annual convention, there was
complete freedom from pain.
The returns showed that in 7,291
cases there was partial anaesthesia
while in the remaining 9,020 the de
sensitizer solution brought unsuccess
ful results.
"The data from such a poll show
that 64 per cent of the cases where
the solution was used experienced
from partial to complete relief,” Dr.
Ryan said. “The Hartman solution
has a definite place in dental practice."

election law was completed yesterda:

, bill, passed at the recently adjoume
, regular session of the Legislature.
The law provides that countin
shall begin at 5 p.m. on election day,
1 hour after the polls close. Counting a
1s forbidden on Sundays and holidays. ~
