RATE MING WIN STOCKS Bails, Equipments and Bus Shares All Decline—In dustrials Hold. BY FRANK MACMILLEN. Associated Press Financial Writer. NEW YORK, February 29—Trans portation issues of all kinds were under fire in today's short stock mar ket session because of the authorized reduction In railroad passenger fares. Equities of the railroads themselves •uffered most, but rail equipment, air craft and Greyhound bus stocks like wise dropped. Numerous industrials survived the downward trend, however, and there were gains of fractions to more than S points in many instances. Utilities and motors were mixed, but changes for the most part were small. Oils were lower. Although It has been pointed out for some time that Eastern roads would stand to Incur the greatest al teration in their rat* structure as a result of the Interstate Commerce Commission action, in today’s market many of the Midwestern and West ern roads went even lower than the Eastern lines. Greatest losses were marked up by Banta Fe, Great Northern preferred, Louisville & Nashville, Northern Pa cific and Pennsylvania. Only a major fraction was lost by New York Cen tral, one of the lines which opposed the I. C. C. order. Greyhound Bus dropped 61,* to 68}* when it was shown that the new coach rates neared some of the bus line schedules. Some of the rail equipment makers lost ground, partly In sympathy with the generally downward movement and in part because of the uncer tainty on future carrier earnings. Among such stocks were American Car & Foundry, American Locomo tive, Baldwin, Lima Locomotive and General Railway Signal. All declined fractions except General Railway, which dropped l1,*. In view of the fact that the air crafts receded only fractionally, if at all, some observers hesitated to ascribe the losses to possible compe tition. As a matter of fact, the air lines carry only a small portion of the total passenger traffic of the Nation. Metals were mixed, with United States Steel down a fraction and Bethlehem common (old) down more than a point. Jones to Laughlin bet tered nearly 2 points. American Smelting to Refining was up, but Anaconda, Kennecott and In ternational Nickel declined. Communication issues and utilities depressed slightly Included American Telephone, Western Union, Common wealth to Southern and North American. Motors were Irregular. Chrysler and Studebaker went up, General Motors was unchanged and Packard was off. The volume of trading was light, only 880,760 shares changing hands, and the Associated Press average of 60 stocks eased .1 of a point to 61.5. McGill Weekly Price Indices (1920*100.)
