Special Dispatch to The Star. NEW YORK, March 10.—February’s volume of domestic machine tool sales showed little drop from the January five-year high record, says American' Machinist. Most localities maintained the same high level of orders with a few feeling a slight slackening. New inquiries are plentiful, and some sales offices are having difficulty in keeping up with them. Deliveries are lengthening be cause of the continued demand. At present te metal-working Industry is practically free from labor difficulties. Close attention is being given the Akron strike, however, to see what impetus it gives to the development of vertical unions. In New England, business held up well, with prospects good during March. New York had bigger volume in February than in January. Phila delphia is pleased with the way the current level is holding and with the number of new inquiries received. Little change is felt in Pittsburgh, but advance inquiries are active; there is evidence here that the heavy indus tries are coming into their own. High executives are coming to the conclu sion, long ago reached by shop men and superintendents, that they must spend money on modernization. Cleveland plants are about 12 weeks behind on commitments and look for good business until June at least. Used machinery sold from the Toledo Willys-Overland plant to satisfy claims, was well absorbed. Both do mestic and foreign 'buying contribute to maintain Cincinnati at a point close to the recent high level. Bad weather has had its effect on Detroit tooling plants, but several re- 1 leases ar$ expected in the next 10 days. Supply sales have held up well. Chicago sales are well maintained with prospects bright for further im provement. -• Ravon Deliveries 9> Continue on Large Seale in February NEW YORK. March 10.—Deliveries of rayon yam to American mills con tinued on a large scale during Febru- j ary, according to Rayon Organon, pub lished by the Textile Economics Bu reau, Inc. Measured by the regular index of the publication, deliveries exceeded those of January as well as the 1935 monthly average, which is accounted for partly by the smaller number of working days in February. Adjusted for normal seasonal varia tion,* however, February deliveries rep resent a small decline from the Janu ary index figure. AIRLINES DISCLOSE BIG GAIN OVER 1935 By the Associated Press. Scheduled air lines carried 44.061 passengers in January, against 28, 922 in the same month last year, it was shown by reports of 23 companies to the Department of Commerce. The index last week was at the lowest level reached since July, 1935, and was 2 per cent under the first week of the current year. It was 46 per cent above the depression low point, which was reached three years ago in the week of March 4, 1933. A month ago the index was 77.5 and a year ago 76.7. As had been the case in earlier weeks the decline in the composite Index last week was largely due to lower prices for foods and farm products. The food index is now at the lowest level reached since the first week of last July. The general trend of food stuff prices was downward during the week with 14 items included in the group declining; the effect of the declines was partially offset by higher prices for flour and fresh pork. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK. March 10.—The first major steel producer announced today second-quarter prices on sheets about - unchanged from the preceding quar ter, but inaugurated a provision for quantity discounts for large users. Republic Steel Corp. took the lead' in adopting the new quantity discount system, which provides for deductions of from $1 to $3 a ton, dependent upon the quantity released for ship ment at one time. The discounts reached the maximum of $3 per ton on orders of over 150 tons. "The new method of issuing prices has been adopted by Republic in ex pectation that it will lead to elimina tion of unfair trade practices which have grown up in the steel Industry,” T. M. Girdler. chairman and president of Republic, said. The price of black sheets was set at 2.40 cents a pound and the price of enameling sheets was set at 2.95 cents a pound, both unchanged from re cently prevailing quotations. A second innnovation in steel pric ing methods was contained in the corporation's statement accompanying the new prices in which it pledged itself to adhere to open price practices. The official price list was published embodying the statement that "if and w-hen any change is made in the price as announced, supplementary or re vised announcement will be Issued." Girdler stated that prices on prod ucts other than sheets will be issued as rapidly as lists can be compiled in the next few days. Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. of Pittsburgh,* another large producer, likewise announced second quarter prices unchanged for most products and announced that buyers of 150 tons or more of hot-rolled bars would be allowed a S3-a-ton discount.
