By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, March 21.—The cot ton futures market had no outstand ing characteristic last week except possibly its extremely narrow price swings. The tightness of the old crop situa ' tion and optimistic views of the gen eral business helped to impart a fairly i steady undertone to the market. May closed yesterday at 11.00 and October I at 10.22 compared with 10.87 and i 10.21, respectively, at the close of the | previous week. The evening up of March commit ments in preparation for the final maturing of the contract next Wed nesday made considerable progress. Brokers supposed to be operating for the producers' pool supplied the March shorts at prices within a few points either way of the average quo tation for spots at the eight delivery points. At the close yesterday the trade was expecting an early announcement of | details regarding proposed payments | to planters who co-operate in soil j conservation. Expectations recently expressed in the trade here as to next season's acreage have ranged between 32,000, 000 and 35,000,000 acres. The preliminary report of the Cen j sus Bureau on total ginnings from the crop of 1935 placing the outturn at 10.417,237 running bales or 10,635.156 equivalent 500-pound bales was within less than 100.000 bales of the official | estimate published last December.
