Fading War Scare and Large Acreage Reports Bring Price Recessions. BY JOHN P. BOUGHAN, Associated Press Market Editor. CHICAGO, March 21—Conforming to the pit’s latest epigram, "There’ll be no war in Europe soon except a war of words." bread material prices at present are lower. Adding to bearish sentiment as to wheat are trade reports emphasizing the large acreage seeded in United States Winter crop territory and the favorable outlook for the crop taken as a whole. These reports also assert flour buyers are slow to take hold, except for im mediate requirements, and suggest it will be possible to obtain flour nearly $1 a bushel cheaper before many mnntht Declines Revealed. Compared to a week ago wheat this morning was down l58-338 cents a bushel, rye and oats also 2 cents to 23s off, with corn at lVi-l’z de cline. but provisions 17 to 32 cents higher. Around 70.000.000 acres of all wheat. Including the Spring crop, mav be seeded in the United States for this year's harvest, based on official esti mates, the third largest on record. It is pointed out, however, that a wide difference exists between the seeded and the harvested acreage. The fact nevertheless remains that no more than the average amount of Winter killing of wheat has yet been reported. On the other hand, an additional *eek of dry weather over most of the hard Winter wheat belt gives stress to need of rain there. Meanwhile disastrous floods In Eastern valley sections are reported to have done much damage to Winter crops. Drought Reports Studied. Bulls assert that the drought sit uation West and Southwest affects a wider area than last year and. unless rains come soon, will be a big market factor. Relative firmness of com is at tributed to the fact that the visible supply continues yet about the small est known for this time of year. Oats are being shipped in very freely, despite the meager returns netted by growers. Provisions owe their strength largely to asserted likelihood of more fa vorable export trade In lard. March, 11.41; May, 11.02; July, 10.65; October, 10.22; De cember, 10.20; January, 10.23. Pool brokers were credited with sell ing March at the opening, which checked the advance in the old crop positions. There also seemed to be some selling of later months by the trade attribut ed to hedging and against recent pur chases of spot cotton from the pool. The market held fairly steady at the end of the first hour with active months about net unchanged to 3 points higher. The outline of the new farm pro gram was read carefully in the trade, but was not generally considered an immediate market factor. Traders both here and in Liverpool seemed to be awaiting some Indication as to its effects in the South. Liverpool cables reported a small market there with some Bombay sell ing and liquidation taken by trade calling. Futures closed iteidy. 1»10 hither. ,, . Open. High. Low Last.
