April 11.—A quiet but selectively firm market was looked for by most of today's broker com mentators. E. A. Pierce A- Co.—We do not be lieve the recent Irregularity of the in dustrials foreshadows a material change in their situation. Henry Clews & Co.—It is quite pos sible there will be more strength than weakness in today's session. Shields A Co.—The probable dull ness of today's session will be exag gerated by the closing of foreign markets. Lamborn. Hutchings A Co.—The opinion seems general, perhaps based only on hope, that a more active and aggressive attitude will develop on the constructive side next week. Jackson Bros., Boesel Sc Co.—While bullish indications still overwhelmingly predominate in the stock market, it is obvious that greater discrimination is advisable. J. S. Barbe Sc Co.—It Is our belief that stocks of well-situated companies are deserving of retention. Hornblower Sc Weeks—Continued resistance to selling movements should enhance prospects for a resumption of the advance. Washington Exchange SALES. Washington Gas 6s B—*1,000 at 101, *500 at 100-8. CHICAGO, April 11.—Regardless of current crop estimates, many market experts express belief the factor domi l nating wheat prices the next four or five weeks will be something unpre dictable. Weather over the domestic Winter wheat belt, it is asserted, will be the chief touchstone. Second in im portance is placed the weather of the Spring wheat region, and third the policy of the Canadian Government Wheat Board in disposing of Canada’* surplus wheat stock. All three are at present regarded in the wheat pit a* practically beyond human ken. Compared With Week Ago. With trade reckonings more or les* based on normal average weather from now on, wheat values this morning compared to a week ago were exactly unchanged to 1'2 cents higher, com *?8 off to -''i up, oats, ’sa'4 advanced, and provisions showing a rise of 7al2 cents. Differences between April estimates of domestic Winter wheat production and the actual corresponding harvests, trade gossip emphasized today, hate varied as much in recent years as 101.000,000 bushels. This is almost precisely the amount which has been tentatively suggested might be the size of a possible wheet export surplus in the United States this season. It is now being pointed out in soma quarters, that at one stage of late, numerous speculators became violently bearish on the theory that the coun try was headed for an export wheat price parity, but to a considerable de gree have since switched. Subject to Hazards. One of the foremost wheat special ists in Chicago is at present quoted as declaring it was jumping at pre mature conclusions to assume that a United States exportable wheat sur plus was already in the bag. Traders ere now beginning better to realize, he adds, that the crop is far from made, and subject to many hazards. A significant circumstance noted is that Chicago July wheet has been ruling more than 4 cents a bushel over Winnipeg July, and ap parently this difference must be wiped out some way before -United States exports are feasible on a scale of any magnitude. Active shipping demand for corn is giving firmness to that grain as well as to oats. Provisions show advances based a good deal on fewer hog arrivals than expected. DOLLAR GOES HIGHER IN LONDON DEALINGS Er the Associated Press. LONDON. April 11—The United States dollar was quoted at 4.94 to the pound on a quiet foreign exchange market today, as compared to Thurs day's close of 4.94'4. The quotation of the French frane remained unchanged at 74.97 to the pound. When You ^ NEED IT FOR HOME and SMALL BUSINESS PROPERTY LOANS Applications Invited 1505 H St. N.W.—Nat. 2345.
