NEW POST sue FOR GEN. COLEMAN Active Army Career to End With Duties as Head of Home. Maj. Gen. Frederick W. Coleman, Chief of the finance department, will end an active Army career which be gan during the Spanish-American War when he assumes his new duties as governor of the United States Sol diers' Home Friday. Receiving his commission as second lieutenant in the Infantry in 1898, he was sent to the Philippines during the insurrection, where he supple * mented his military duties by acting as president of a captured Filipino town. Returning to the United States, he was in San Francisco at the time of the earthquake and fire which fol lowed and rendered important service in connection with civilian relief. His subsequent service included tours in Alaska, on the Mexican border dur ing the disturbances of 1916. and to Panama, where he was the first pro vost marshal of the City of Panama. He constructed the Army post at Quarry Heights In the Canal Zone. When the World War broke out he was assigned to command Fort Ben jamin Harrison, near Indianapolis, Ind., and later went to France with the 91st Division. He was twice rec ommended for the Distinguished Service Cross for gallantry in action, once by the commanding general of his division and once by Gen. John J. Pershing, A. E. F.. commander. In addition he received the Distinguished Service Medal. When the finance department was created in 1920. Col. Coleman was ap pointed assistant chief of the new branch. He was appointed chief of finance in 1£32 with the rank of ma jor general. During the fbur-year tour he is just completing he has handled not only Army finances but also those of the C. C. C. In addition to completing customary courses in Army service schools. Gen. Coleman is a distinguished marks man and was a member of the Army rifle team in 1910. His hobby Is golf, but he can also, according to reports, hold his own in a game of draw or stud. He is passing from the active to the retired list six years before the statutory age limit of 64. Phillips of Texarkana, Tex., has an nounced he ivill enter the po litical race against Represen tative Patman, champion of the bonus. Patman also is a Texarkana resident. UP).—When school started in district No. 12 last Autumn the teacher, Mildred Henderson, had three pupils. Two moved away. The ; third died this week of complications | from a bullet wound.
