TARZAN AND THE LEOPARD MEN.

With utmost caution, Tarzan swam silently toward
the island temple of the Leopard Men. As he ap
proached it he became aware of an ominous swish
in" in the water. Then, by the dim light from the
temple he saw a crocodile, its hideous jaws agape,
bearing down on him!
With a quick turn he averted those deadly jaw*.
Then he whirled again and drove hi* knife into the
creature's belly. Unerringly the keen blade found
a vital spot, for it was Tartan's business to know
the vulnerable points of all the killer beasts of his
jungle domain.
Realizing that the lashing death throes of the croco
dile would bring more of the reptiles to the scene,
the ape man struck out boldly and rapidly for the
island. This was a time for vigorous swiftness rather
than silent caution, and he came safely to the dismal
shore.
The tiny beach was deserted. Fortunately the is
land was not well guarded, for the Leopard Men
never dreamed that an enemy could come near this
secret retreat of their Grand Chief. Now Tarzan
gazed upon the forbidding temple and murmured:
“I must know what’s inside!’’
