“FOUND" IN 1800'S Modern and Fashionable Deauville Patronized by English. DEAUVILLE, France, June 27.—If you wish to see Parisians in the Sum mer, you must visit Normandy, the Normans say. for its seaside resorts are one of the most popular play grounds of the French capital. Deauville, Trouville, Dieppe and a score of villages and towns along the Normandy coast attract the fashion able world of Paris? during July and August, and many visitors from the United States and England throng there to enjoy their holidays with the French. Deauville is the very modem and fashionable Summer resort of France, with an excellent beach, a casino, a theater, races and other entertain ments. During July and August its promenade is truly cosmopolitan. The | beach is gay with bathing tents, blue I and white striped ones alternating with orange and white ones; the terrace is bright with parasols, and the public parks between the city proper and the beach are a riot of flowers. Deauville was unknown until the 1860s. and none of the resorts along the coast of Normandy has been famous for more than three-quarters of a century. Trouville, the neighbor j of Deauville, less than a 100 years ago was a mere fishing village. Dumas' Experience. In 1830 Trouville had but one inn, and when Alexander Dumas, author of "The Three Musketeers,” visited it the first time, the innkeeper's wife refused to quote him prices until she had asked whether he was a painter or a poet. She explained that painters had ravenous appetites and therefore had to pay more than poets, who were usually melancholy and never thought of food. Years later some one decided that Trouville would make an excellent vacation place, hotels sprang up, and it gained in favor, villas were built on the heights overlooking the beach and the sea. Its surroundings are particularly attractive, for it is! backed by densely wooded hills. Some of the finest and most in teresting scenery on the coast of Normandy is near Etretat, which was discovered by the painter Isabey and became a favorite haunt of Guy de Maupassant, the famous French short story writer, who lived at the Villa La Guillette The cliffs here are very fine, with many natural arches and caves. Even though Etretat is today the favorite vacation spot of many Frenchmen, it is still a fishing village to its inhabitant*, and fishing boats are still hauled up on the sands of its beach. Dieppe on Cliff. Dieppe, too, is situated on the sea side cliffs of Normandy. The town, In a break in the white chalk cliffs, was founded in the tenth century by the Norse and got its name from the depth of its harbor. Then at the end of the seventeenth century It was burned and later rebuilt, so that it spite of its age. it looks much newer than many cities of fewer years. Dieppe is a favorite of English visitors, who spend week ends or short holidays at it. The town faces spacious lawns, which stretch along the shore from the casino to the 1 jetties of the harbor. Its fishermen j live in the suburb of Le Pollet. and ! the fish market never fails to interest visitors. Normandy also has many smaller seaside resorts that are deservedly popular among artists and writers. One of the best of these is Granville, a port of several thousand inhabitants, near Mont St. Michel. During the Summer months It takes on the ap pearance of a resort while retaining its air of a seaport, and scores of painters visit it for its sunsets and the beautiful color of its sea. -• BIG STONE CHIEF FOUND ON ALLEGHANIES’ CREST Another “Old Man of the Moun tains’’ Discovered by White Sulphur Springs Vacationists. WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va., June 27.—Lo, these many years the destinies of White Splphur Springs, once a famous hunting ground of various tribes of Indians during seasonal migrations from the East to the plains of the West, have been faithfully guarded unknown to white men by an old Indian chief, as yet unnamed. Supreme for centuries in the stony silence of a wooded wilderness near the crest of the Alleghanies, this age less Indian was recently discovered high up in the mountains by colonists of the Greenbrier while horseback riding on the nearby Bob's Ridge Trail. This old chief, formed of huge rocks, gives the Alleghanies an "Old Man of the Mountains,” somewhat similar to the famous stone head seen profile in the Presidential Range of the White Mountains in New Hamp shire. The old chief of the Alle ghanies, however, differs, in that the j likeness Is a front view of his face, \ which reveals in a striking manner the high cheek bones and other facial characteristics of the Indian. ROMANCE AND GHOST FOR SALE WITH FORT ——■————— | 6-Foot Wall* Guarded Queen. Elizabeth at Tilbury, Opposite Gravesend. LONDON, June 27.—The famed Tilbury Fort, built in 1539 by Henry VIII on the Thames Estuary op posite Gravesend, is for sale, com plete with romance, history, moat and ghost. From the battlements, over looking its 18 acres of ground, Queen Elizabeth bade farewell to her troops before they sailed down the estuary to meet the Spanish armada. Sheep now graze over the area, while chick ens pick their food along paths trod den by kings, and the" fort lives on its memories. Legend has it that a ghost walks there by night. The ghost is that of a woman who appears in the dead of night rattling chains. No one knows who she is. The Queen slept within the 6-foot-thick walls, and her bed room may still be seen. In the sally port, legend has it, condemned men were hanged from the colossal oak beam and then heisted to the loft above, known as the dead house. An old magazine, with 6-foot walls, is said to have been built by French prisoners during the Napoleonic wars. -• Soviet Expects 24,000 Tourists.
