By the Associated Press. CLEVELAND, July 20.—The maga sine Steel reported today a moderate tapering of steelworks operations to 68 '/a per cent, down 1 point. At the same time last year the na tional rate was 43 per cent. “Labor organization in steel," said the publication, “is driving in a cer tain amount of tonnage from con sumers seeking to build up stocks as a hedge against possible interrup tions in production. “Buying attributed to this situation has been particularly noticeable in material, on which mills are quoting deferred deliveries.” Auto Production Receding. Automobile production is receding slowly, and heat Is tampering mill schedules, Steel said, but the ship building industry is more active. “In dustrial equipment manufacturers are busy on an extraordinarily good volume of orders. Machine tool orders in June were the highest since No vember, 1929.” Steel said “automobile assemblies last week were down 6,516 units to 91,317. Some manufacturers have been unable to set a definite date for ending production of their 1936 models, because of the relatively good current demand. A small amount of steel buying has begun for 1937 cars. “The first large contract for Con nellsvtlle beehive coke since the de pression began calls for shipments of 15,000 to 20,000 tons a month, for at least five months and may run a year, for Pittsburgh Steel Co.” Operations Up. The magazine estimated operations In the Youngstown district were up 2 points to 76 per cent, Wheeling up 12 points to 81; Pittsburgh was down 1 to 63; Chicago, 1 to 70; Cleve land, 33’4 to 51; Buffalo, 3 to 84, and New England, 5 to 63. Other dis tricts were unchanged. ‘‘Activity in the scrap market has been quiet,” it said, “but steel’s scrap composite has made small gains lor three consecutive weeks, the latest a 12-cent increase to $12.91. The iron and steel price index is up 1 cent to $33.49, and the finished steel com posite remains at $53.40 lor the third straight week.” Washington Produce BUTTER—Range of prlcM to store* lathered from wholesale dealers (prices to nearby shippers based on Philadelphia and New York prices): Ona-pound print*, car ton (83 aeore), 35; 1-pound prints, ear ton (92 score), 35: 1-pound prints, carton (90 score), 3*: %-pound prints, carton (92 scora). 35; ‘/--pound prints, carton (90 score). 35; tubs (93 score), 34; tubs (90 score). 33. From the beginning, the associations have been dedicated to the highest ethical standards; i. e. . . . sound business practice, a full recognition of responsibility to home owner members . . . and the principle that "the American home is the safeguard of American liberties.” Today, there are twenty responsible association* holding membership in the League, enjoying a distinguished service record averaging forty-five years. The combined League resources are over $105,000,000.00 with a borrow ing and sa~> ing membership exceeding one hundred and twenty-tw o thousand. . n Seventy-five percent of League members are also members of the Federal Home Loan Bank System and thereby enjoy a line of credit exceeding $31,600,000.00 with that great reservoir of financial safety and confidence. Here, then, we have tangible evidence of unquestioned financial responsibility, of business integrity, of a friendly, co-operative, helpful service that Washington fami lies have enjoyed down through the years, generation after generation, through League members. Today, more than ever before, the members of tne League offer me aame friendly, responsible service they offered to your fathers and grandfathers. Today, more than ever before, they offer security for savings combined with assured returns. Members of the District of Columbia Building & loan league | AMERICAN Organized Aug.
