ALICE I.aJVEST AND MS. • Ashbrook Death in Cycle Race Caused by Avoiding Onlooker The telegram Richard Ashbrook, 31. former George Washington University student, promised to aend his parents here if he won the motor cycle race et Swazey, N. H., yesterday never came. He was killed almost instantly when he crashed into a tree on a turn of the JVi-mile track, which Includes several hairpin curves. Mr. and Mrs. Orover Ashbrook had waited at their home, 1331 Fairmont street, until S p.m. for the wire. When it did not come, they supposed he had failed to win and went out to dinner. Upon their return, they learned from reporters that their son had been killed. A telegram received shortly after ward from James Stonebreaker, 307 C street, who had gone to Swasey with Ashbrook, advised the youth’s father that Richard had swerved to avoid striking an onlooker who was crossing the track, and had lost con trol of his machine, traveling at about 70 miles an hour. His skull was frac tured and his body badly mutilated when the machine struck the tree. John P. McMahon, #0, of Osone Park, Long Island,, was killed 30 minutes later when struck by another machine while crossing the track, ac cording to Associated Press dispatches. The body will be brought here, ac companied by Stonebraker, but fu neral arrangements had not been completed today. Burial will be here or in Chicago, the former home of the Ashbrooks. Richard Ashbrook had attended * RICHARD ASHBROOK. night classes at George Washington University for the past year and a half. He withdrew in February, but was planning to resume his studies in mechanical engineering this Fall. He was working for his father, a con tractor, when he left here Friday with another friend, Clark Trumbull, a mechanic for a motor cycle sales com pany here. CAPT. DAMPMAN DIES IN HOSPITAL Won Praise as Naval En gineer—Commanded Transport in War. Capt. Paul Edward Dampman. 52, U. S. N.. retired, who had distin guished himself in engineering and other fields in the Navy, died yester day in Naval Hospital. He had been ill for some time with heart disease. Capt. Damp man was retired eight years ago for disability in curred in line of duty. H i s last service was as In spector of naval materials at Pittsburgh and outlying districts. During the Cspi. D«mpm»n. WorId w B r he was in command of the troop trans port Lenape. Later in the war he was engineer officer of the battleship Wyoming. Capt. Dampman, a resident of this city for the last six years, lived at 3640 Kanawha street. A native of Reading, Pa., he was the son of the late Col. and Mrs. John Buchanan Dampman. He was graduated from the Naval Academy In 1904 and afterward took a special course in steam engineering at the Navy Department. Duty had included service aboard several battle ships and considerable shore duty at Annapolis and Boston. From Decem ber, 1914, to December, 1915, he was in command of the Panther, mother ship to destroyers. Capt. Dampman was a member of the Army and Navy Country Club and the Society of Naval Engineers. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Minnie T. Dampman, and daughter, Miss Marjorie Jane Dampman. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday In Fort Myer Chapel. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery, with full military honors. MAN SLAIN HERE I Herbert Marshall, 42, colored, 2018 Government court, was shot to death in front of his home yesterday by an unknown assailant. He died in Emer gency Hospital 20 minutes after the shooting. Police were told that Marshall's assailant, also colored, drew a revolver and fired without warning while talk ing to his victim. Hie bullet entered Marshall's head. Major. 1 70, cashier and paymaster of the Lansburgh & Bro. Department Store, who died Thursday at his home, 1316 Shepherd street, were held Saturday at Gawler’s chapel. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery. A native of this city. Mr. Major had been employed by the department store lor the past 58 years. He long had been prominently identified with the Masonic fraternity. He was past master of the B B. 1 French Lodge. F. A. A. M.: past high priest of Capital Chapter, Royal Arch Masons, and a past grand high priest of Royal Arch Masons In the District. He also was a member of Washing ton Commandery, Knights Templar; Almas Temple of the Mystic Shrine and a charter member of bothe the Martha Chapter, Order of the East ern Star, and the Henry-Stanley ' Masonic Club of Lansburgh & Bro. In 1899 Mr. Major was married to j Miss Ida Hart, sister of the late Samuel Hart. He is survived by his widow, two daughters. Miss Bertha H. Major and Miss Ruth F. Major, both of this city; two sons, W'illiam L. and Gilbert D. Major, this city, and a sis ter. Mrs. Percy M. Hughes, Syracuse, N. Y.
