Mr. Hanford, who, after an illness of 10 days, failed to rally from an at tack of grip with complications, had been an employe of The Star since 1895. In his 42 years with the organi zation his fine record of service had ultimately placed him in an executive position of far-reaching duties and great trust. Prom the time he was as sistant bookkeeper at the age of 21 until his death the qualities which led to his advancement became more and more apparent. Born in Sterling, Va., June 27, 1874, the son of Levi and Emma Gardiner Hanford, he came to Washington as a youth and received his later educa tion here before becoming associated with The Star. On October 22, 1901, he married Miss Nellie Mae Pugh, daughter of the late Representative and Mrs. Samuel J. Pugh of Kentucky, who survives him. Three Children Survive. Surviving, besides his widow, are a daughter, Mrs. William Preston Haynes: two sons. Wesley G. and S. J. Hanford, the former at present asso ciated with The Star; two grand children, William Preston Haynes, jr., and Helen Hanford Haynes, and a sister, Mrs. Carrie Gullickaon of Los Angeles, Calif. Mr. Hanford was a charter member of Temple-Noyes Masonic Lodge here and a member of the Blue Ridge Rod and Gun Club. Harpers Perry. W. Va. His wide acquaintance with Wash ington business and professional men, both the cause and effect of his ex traordinary efficiency and compelling personality, elicited yesterday expres sions of sorrow at his passing. SASSER DIES IN HOSPITAL Native of North Carolina Was Railway Employe—Funeral Tomorrow. Edward C. Sasser. 61, died yesterday at the Washington Sanitarium in Ta koma Park, Md„ after a brief illness. Mr. Sasser came to Washington in 1920 from North Carolina, where he was born, in Raleigh. November 16. 1875. For several years he was super intendent of motive power of the Southern Railway and at one time served on a Government commission to make a study of railroad transpor tation systems. He is survived by his widow. Mrs. Clara A. Sasser, and four brothers, John, Princeton, W. Va.; William H„ Rome, Ga.. and Phil H. and Ben M.. both of Raleigh. Rival debating teams from George town College and Manhattan College will meet tomorrow evening at the Hilltop. Represented by its Gaston Society, the Georgetown team of sophomores will oppose the fixing of minimum wages and maximum hours in indus try. It will be the first public contest this season for the Gaston team, which has scheduled debates this year with Fordham, Columbia and Princeton.
