NEW YORK, January 11—A few
selected issues pushed into higher
ground in the bond market today, but
the list generally receded from Satur
day's strength and there were a good
many fractional losses.
Brokers said buyers were hesitant
In making long-term commitments
pending clarification of the Mediter
ranean crisis and in the face of pre
dicted tighter money conditions.
United States Government loans
Were generally lower by from l-32nd
to 3-32nds of a point, but foreign issues
showed some strength. South Ameri
cans were in fair demand and Argen
tine 6s of 1957, Brazil 6’2S, Buenos
Aires Vs-^sS. and Colombia 6s were
fractionally higher. Up also were
some Belgian and Japanese bonds.
Among the domestic corporate issue
Anaconda Copper 4’2S. American &
Foreign Power 5s. Columbia Gas <fe
Electric 5s, Hiram Walker 4>4s and
Loew s 3'is Improved a shade. The
decrease in rail freight loadings re
ported for last week had some effect
on the carriers and losses of as much
•s 12 point were recorded.

tions In the steel industry for the
current week declined .6 of* a point
to 78.8 per cent of capacity, compared
with 79.4 last week, the American
Iron Sc Steel Institute estimated today.
A month ago operations averaged
79.2 per cent of capacity, while a year
ago the rate was 49.4 per cent.

ance stocks in the New York City
market registered moderate gains dur
ing the last week, according to records
compiled by Holt, Rose & Troster.
The agregate value of 20 leading
fire and casualty Insurance issues on
January 8 totaled S662.436.000 com
pared with $648,852,000 at the close of
the previous week, an Increase of
$13,584,000, or 2.09 per cent. The 1936
high, registered on January 24. was
$731,187,000.
The current average yield of the
20 issues of 3.22 per cent compares
with a yield of 3.29 per cent on
December 31. The current market
value equals 1.19 times the current
liquidating value against 1.17 times
at the close of the previous week.
