NORRIS DAM IMPOUNDS A GREAT LAKE Holding back a mass of Clinch River water spreading over
34.000 acres in the Upper Tennessee Valley, this T V. A. project was one check on the Tennessee River
flow which would have added more to the Ohio and Mississippi deluge but for the power and flood-control
works already completed. a p Photo

Building Against Flood
JJNCLE SAM spends many millions
in the gigantic task of harnessing
the mighty Mississippi and its tributaries
to safeguard bordering cities from future
flood devastation. In addition to the
great dams built, under way and planned,
a system of catch basins mapped out for
the menacing Ohio Valley waters awaits
only the money for their construction.
Reforestation of denuded drainage lands
also fits into the flood control plans.
WATER THAT DIDN'T JOIN
THE FLOOD The Norris Dam
changes nature's face by forming
this great lake cupped in the moun
tains of East Tennessee. Here is
water to serve, not floods, but man
for power and navigation.
