EDWARD B. ADAMS DEAD HERE AT 6? Founder of Hotel Supply Firm Retired From Business in 1931. Edward Beckley Adams. 67. founder and former president of E. B. Adams * Co . dealers in hotel supplies and household furnishings, died today after a long illness at his home, 103 Leland •treet, Chevy Chase. Md. Mr. Adams, widely known here, for merly was chess champion of the Dis trict for several years and long had been active in the Capital City Chess Club, which he once served as presi dent. He founded the business firm here (n 1902 and retired in 1931, at which time he sold his interest in the business. Active in a number of organizations. Mr. Adams was a former president of the Retail Credit Men's Association, waa a member of the Civitan Club, the Columbia Country Club and the Racquet Club. Surviving him are his widow, Mrs. Sarah Godman Adams: three daugh ters. Mrs. Dorothy Bowie and Miss Sarah Margaret Adams, both of this rity, and Mrs. Ruth Patton. Engle wood, N. J.; two sons. Edward G. and Donald H. Adams, this city: a brother. William Adams, and a sister. Miss Margaret Adams, both of Baltimore, and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm. Saturday at Mr. Adams’ late residence. Burial will be In Woodlawn Cemetery, Baltimore Md. PROMOTION IS DUE FOR COL. METCALFE Senate Consider* Nomination for Post of Assistant Sur geon General. The Senate today la considering the nomination by the President of Col. Raymond P. Metcalfe, Army Medical Oorpe, now chief of the surgical serv ice at Walter Reed General Hospital, to be assistant surgeon general for a period of four years, beginning March 1. Col. Metcalfe was nominated, on the recom mendationof Secretary of War Woodring, to suc ceed Brig. Gen. M. A. W. Shock ley, who will re tire. on his own C«l. M. T. MtUilh. Application, on February 28. after more than 30 years of service. Col. Metcalfe would be advanced to the rank of brigadier general. Born in Salamanca, N. Y.. May 27, 1877. Col. Metcalfe attended the Uni versity of Buffalo, graduating with an M. D. degree in 1900. He was appoint ed assistant surgeon in the Army on October 30, 1901. He came to Wash ington a month after entering the service to attend the Army Medical School, from which he was graduated in April, 1902. He was ordered to the Philippines and played a notable part In fighting the cholera epidemic at Tacloban, Leyte. He returned to Washington In the Summer of 1913 for duty in the at tending surgeon’s office, where he served for a little more than a year. He went to France in July. 1910. as surgeon, 36th Division, and served in the Oise-Aisne and Meuse-Argonne operations. He then became surgeon, 1st Army Corps. For his war service he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. -• “East Lynne’’ Turned Down.
