By the Way— ' Beth Blaine ... . 'J'HE Commercial Counselor of the Netherlands Legation and Mme. Mole camp’s gay little house in Qeorgetown was the setting yesterday after noon for a cocktail party in honor of the officers of the Dutch submarine 0-16, anchored at the Navy Yard (are submarines anchored?) Among those present was the famous and well-known scientist, Prof. Meinesz, who is making the "shake-down” cruise of the 0-16. The professor, who is 6 feet 7 in height, in his own words, has confessed that he has a permanent crick in his spine, for it seems that there is no place on board the submarine where he may allow his full height to express itself in a comfortable stretch! Among the numerous guests gathered beneath the Molekamp’s hospitable too) was the Netherlands Minister with Mme. de With, who dressed in black with red fox, as usual lent an air of chic and beauty ito the gathering. Comdr. and Mrs. Mark-Wardlaw of the British Embassy brought their house guest, Comdr. Wallner, who is returning to his native land via. this country from a two-year duty with the British fleet in Australia. Mrs. Mark-Wardlaw’s navy blue suit and unique straw hat with a flat grosgrain ribbon was most becoming. Nora de With, also in dark blue, sat on a sofa literally surrounded by brass buttons. The officers, resplendent with much gold braid and epaulets, explained in faultless English that “it was their Sunday go-to-meeting garb.” Nora de With amused us all by stating that all the men In Holland think a lot of themselves, for it seems that in the land of the demure starched lace cap and wooden sabots the ladies are the ones who do the courting! However, from the alacrity with which the officers bestowed attentions upon the feminine contingent present yesterday it seems hard to believe her statement. One of the visitors in particular, Second Lieut. A. H. von Preytag Drabbe, who much to his disgust has been likened unto that new cinema idol, Tyrone Powers, seemed unspoilt and only too delighted to fetch a cocktail, light a cigarette, as well as furnish amusing anecdotes. Another of the guests, a red-headed lieutenant who chattered Dutch with ease, turned out to be an officer in our own Navy, one Mr. Sylvester. Coming and going during the afternoon we encountered Nancy Mann in a new Spring bonnet, a chic whisp of straw with a lacquered sire camillia on top; Helen Rodgers in black satin talking with Alson Boyd; Mme. Wijkman of the Swedish Legation with the young Ernest Schlatters and Robert Webster, secretary of the Union of South Africa: also Otakar Kabelac of the Czechoslovak Legation, Bradford Magill, down from New York; one Capt. Farmer, who had much in common with Mme. de With, having lived for many years in Java, where Mm*, de With was born—and many others. JF ANY ONE had any doubts as to whether Mrs. W. D. Thomas la a giver of good parties, all their doubts have been dispersed to the four winds after attending the dance given by Helen Thomas Saturday night at the 1925 F Street Club. The club, of course, is an ideal background for a small dance with its lovely furniture, masses of beautiful flowers well arranged and placed with taste and care throughout the rooms and the ever-delicious con tinuous buffef supper. Then with the addition of a number of attrac tive gay people, champagne and good music, the preliminary steps have been taken toward an evening of fun with a capital F. However, the hostess has to do a little worrying and arranging, for nice furniture, pretty women and flowers alone won't make a party after midnight. For the amusement of her guests Saturday night. Mrs. Thomas imported from New York a brilliant impersonator known as Afrique, who apparently can be seen and heard at the Ritz. At the appointed hour the Englishman arrived—Afrique, believe it or not, is English, over 6 feet tall, dark and powerful looking—and impersonated with skill various characters, from Eddie Cantor to George Bernard Shaw! All the guests congregated in the dancing room for the entertainment, and glancing about we saw seated in chairs Mrs. Thomas’ mother, Mrs. Marye, and her sister. Miss Doyle; Mme. de With, wife of The Netherlands Minister; Mrs. Sidney Cloman, Mrs. J. Hamilton Lewis, Mrs. Wallach Merriam, Admiral and Mrs. Mark L. Bristol, Mrs. Alvin T. Hert, Mr. and Mrs. Kurt Hetzel, Mrs. Warren Delano Robbins and Mrs. Eldridge Jordan The rest of the assembled company sat on the floor, including Mrs. George T. Pettingill, Mrs. Kent Legare, Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Du Bose, Mrs. ’'Eve" Symington, Mr. and Mrs. John Hinckley, Mr. and Mrs. Henri de Sibour. Mrs. Hugh D. Auchincloss, Margot Garrett. Ethel Worthington, Tinsley Gamett, Baron Paul Schell, Edward Kulikowski, Nora de With, Mr. and Mrs. Chauncey Parker, Charles Saint, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Pell and their house guest, Mrs. Lowe Fiske; Mr. and Mrs. C.
