BT the Associated Press. NEW YORK. February 23—The bond market beat an irregular retreat today in the face of a sagging trend In stocks. The scanty turnover in the first hour, however, indicated to observers of investment affairs the market was suffering more from lack of attention than any other factor. Offerings were extremely light save for a flurry short ly after the opening. Railroad liens drew the major share of what interest there was. Chicago A North Western 4:i4s remained un changed at around 23*.* after a fairly heavy volume of business, and Rock Island general 4s advanced a minor fraction, also on a good turnover. Other rail bonds in the active di vision included Santa Fc 4s. Baltimore A Ohio 4'jS. Nickel Plate 4'aS and New York Central 5s, all of which either held unchanged or were a shade higher. Industrial and utility issues did lit . tie either way. v United States Governments held narrowly in a range 1-32 of a point higher to 2-32 lower. The guaranteed division was most active.
