NEW YORK. February 23—The
bond market beat an irregular retreat
today in the face of a sagging trend
In stocks.
The scanty turnover in the first
hour, however, indicated to observers
of investment affairs the market was
suffering more from lack of attention
than any other factor. Offerings were
extremely light save for a flurry short
ly after the opening.
Railroad liens drew the major share
of what interest there was. Chicago
A North Western 4:i4s remained un
changed at around 23*.* after a fairly
heavy volume of business, and Rock
Island general 4s advanced a minor
fraction, also on a good turnover.
Other rail bonds in the active di
vision included Santa Fc 4s. Baltimore
A Ohio 4'jS. Nickel Plate 4'aS and
New York Central 5s, all of which
either held unchanged or were a shade
higher.
Industrial and utility issues did lit
. tie either way.
v United States Governments held
narrowly in a range 1-32 of a point
higher to 2-32 lower. The guaranteed
division was most active.

CHICAGO, February 23.—Newspaper
advertising by retail merchants in 74
major cities for this year through
February 13 was 3.692,330 lines, or
5.6 per cent in excess of the corre
sponding period of 1936, Advertising
Age, national advertising newspaper,
stated today.
The report shows a total of 108,139,
140 lines of retail newspaper adver
tising lor the year to date, against
102,446.810 lines in the like period of
1936.
For the week ended February 13
retail advertising volume was 17,632,
400 lines, against 16,497,850 lines for
the corresponding week of last year, a
gain of 1,134,550 lines, or 6.9 per cent
for the current week. •

NEW YORK, February 23 —An in
crease of 2.52 per cent in the daily
average sales of fluid milk in Jan
uary over December was reported to
day by the Milk Industry Foundation.
Based on reports from 133 leading
markets, the foundation said daily
sales in January averaged 6.167,000
quarts, compared with 6,016,000 in De
cember.
Other statistics were: Employment
in the industry down .04 per cent; pay
rolls down .09 per cent.
