Tiny Hero Rewarded.
Little Pista Toth, 11, supporter of
his mother and crippled father, is
back in his home town in Hungary, a
hero. He went to Kolozvar, Transyl
vania, where the Greek Orthodox Ru
manians assemble at the river and
their priest throws a cross into the
icy waters, whereupon selected volun
teers plunge in to retrieve it. The
one who succeeds is given a reward.
Pista Toth tried to see the bishop but
was brushed aside. He waited all night
in the cold, hoping that he might be
chosen to strive for the reward.
When the bishop hurled the cross out
amid the broken ice, Pista Toth
plunged in with the rest. Another
gained the prize, but the tiny hero
was questioned, given money and taken
home in triumph.
