mGiant Shelter Belt Held Success
1550 of Every 740 Trees Living
B* tht Associated Press.
Government tree experts claim that
planting just 2 per cent of the
Nation's shelter belt was enough to
prove its wrorth.
They said that 550 of every 740
trees planted on shelter strips and
farm windbreaks in the prairie States
had lived, surviving two of the worst
drought* In history, a* well as a with
ering storm of public and political
criticism.
President Roosevelt, In July, 1934,
announced the plan for planting strips
of trees in a 100-mile belt stretching
from Canada to Texas through the
region of droughts and duststorms.
Forest experts said these shelter belts
would soften the blistering dry winds
of Summer and the icy blasts of
Winter.
Critics called the idea a “hare
brained nightmare” and a waste of
the $15,000,000 in Federal relief funds
allocated. They said trees had never
grown on the stretches of semi-arid
prairies and never would.
The Forest Service says today mil
lions of young trees—some 15 and 16
feet high—are growing in the Great
Plains as a result of the project, al
though less than $3,000,000 had been
spent.
Officials said they had received
hundreds of favorable letters from
farmers in the area who had planted
trees or wanted them planted, but
added that continuation of the project
rested with Congress.
Senator Norris, from the Prairie
State of Nebraska, has introduced a
measure providing for Federal, State
and individual co-operation in farm
forestry. Officials said this would per
mit continuation of the shelter belt
on a permanent basis if Congress
approved the provision for spending
up to $5,000,000 each year.
The farmers with wood lots estimated
they saved an average of $326 each
year through production of wood for
fuel, posts and poles, Increased crops
and garden yield, and protection of
buildings, equipment and live stock.
Forest Service officials said 73,000,
000 acres were involved in the original
shelter belt and that a windbreak of
trees, three rows wide, around every
40 acres of fine, sandy soil in the
area, could eliminate erosion by soil
blowing.
