‘Holy Week’ Is Topic of Dr. O. J. Hart Holy Communion to Be Observed at St. John’s Church. r\R. OLIVER J. HART, rector of ^ st. John’s Church, will preach on Palm Sunday on “The Meaning of Holy Week,” at both the 9:30 and the 11 o'clock services. At 9:30 there will be a celebration of the holy communion; at 11 o’clock, morning prayer, special music; holy com munion, 8 a m.; evening prayer and •ermon by Rev. William Curtis White, curate, 7:45 p.m. His sermon will be on “Christ, Our Savior.” Plans for the dedication of the Robert Johnston memorial pew on May 23, the second anniversary of Dr. Johnston’s death, are being com pleted. At a recent meeting of the vestry Col. George B. McClellan, senior warden, was appointed general chair man of the Committee for Dedication. The following are subcommittees: Miss Anna McGowan, program; Mrs. Elvin R. Heiberg, service: Miss H. L. Sar gent, invitations; Miss Julia William son, altar, and Col. McClellan, finance. Dr. Hart will be the preacher at the Wednesday night service in Holy Week and will also conduct the three hour service of the passion on Good Friday from 12 to 3. On Thursday evening there will be a celebration of the holy Communion at 8 p.m. -• DUMBARTON M. E. GIVES PROGRAM Special Palm Sunday services will be held in Dumbarton Avenue M. E. Church. At 11 a m. the minister will preach on "The Triumphs of Christ.” There will be also a Junior sermon for the children. Special music at both morning and evening services. Monday and Tuesday at 8 p.m., Quarterly Conference Committee on Evangelism and Church Records will meet at the parsonage. Wednesday at 8 p.m., sermon by Dr. Rev. G. Ellis Williams, superintendent of the Wash ington district. The fourth quarterly conference will be held. Thursday at 8 p.m., holy communion. Union service, with Dr. H. A. Kester preaching and Dr. Skinner and Dr. Austin assisting, Friday at 8 p.m. PASTOR RETURNS AFTER ABSENCE After more than a month’s absence, Dr. Ulysses G. B. Pierce, minister of All Souls’ Unitarian Church, will return to his pulpit tomorrow and will preach on "Today's Challenge." The speaker before the Adult Class tn Current Problems will be Leifur Magnusson of the International Labor Office. His subject is "World Social Trends.” Dr. B. J. Lloyd of the United States Public Health Service will continue the discussion of "Medi cine in the Bible" at the Class in Comparative Religions. The feature at the motion picture hour in Pierce Hall at 7:30 will be "Cardinal Riche lieu,” with George Arliss. Special services will be held Thurs day and Friday at 5 o'clock. The serv ice Thursday will be a communion and at the Good Friday service the Universalist National Memorial Church will co-operate. Dr. Frederic W. Skinner will preach at the 11 o’clock service tomorrow In Georgetown Presbyterian Church on “The Kingliness of Lowliness.” The intermediate young people will meet in Clssel Chapel at 6:30 p.m. At the meeting of the senior young people Mrs. Ralph D. Lutherans To Receive Members Dr. Blackwelder Will Speak on “Palm Sunday Today.” A* THE Lutheran Church of the Reformation Dr. Oscar P. Black welder will speak tomorrow at 11 o'clock on "The Significance of Palm Sunday for Today." A large group of new members will be received. Under the leadership of Dr. Ray mond J. Seeger, the young people’s department of the Sunday school will continue the Lenten study, "How Shall We Think of God?” The guest speaker will be Miss Anne Seesholtz, formerly executive secretary of the National Home Missions Council. Dr. Blackwelder will speak at 8 p.m. on "Blueprints and a Cathedral Life.” Holy communion will be held follow ing the evening service. This will be the first of nine Holy Week and Easter communion services. Other com munion services during the week will be held each evening at 9:15, except Thursday, when the Holy Thursday communion is announced for 8 o’clock. Services will be held each evening during Holy Week, with a service of fellowship for Monday at 8 o’clock, a service of devotion Tuesday at 8, a preparatory service Wednesday at 8 and holy communion Thursday at 8. The chorus choir will sing Maunder’s cantata, "Olivet to Calvary,” on Good Friday evening at 8. Under the auspices of the Lutheran Ministers’ Association of Washington and vicinity, a three-hour service will be held in this church on Good Friday from 12 to 3 o'clock. The service is in charge of Revs. George Grewenow and Edward G. Goetz. The speakers will be Dr. Carl C. Rassmussen, Dr. Gerhard Lenski, Rev. Howard Snyder, Rev. J. Adrian Pfeiffer, Rev. GARNER SELECTS THEME “The Contrasts at the Cross” will be the subject of the Palm Sunday sermon in the Sixth Presbyterian Church by Rev. J. H. Garner. This Palm Sunday sermon is the sixth of the series of Lenten sermons based on the Lord’s Prayer. At 10:15 at the adult forum the subject will be “The Trial of Jesus Before Pilate and the Jewish Court.” The speaker is Robert F. Bauer, a graduate of Union Theologi cal Seminary. Miss Etta Mai Russell, Juvenile Court worker of the Washington Fed eration of Churches, will be the guest of the evening group for supper at 6 o’clock and will speak about her work. Mrs. E. G. AT A meeting of the Committee on Religious Life in the Nation’s Capital last Monday, preliminary plans were made for the third annual mass meeting to be held in the Fall. These meetings are to promote interest in religion and church loyalty as essen tial grounds for personal and social well-being. In former years Secre taries Hull and Roper and outstanding speakers of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish groups have participated in the program and plans for the coming one anticipate some very Interesting features. A special committee was appointed to work in co-operation with the committee of the Family Service As sociation which is seeking to secure increased action among the churches in meeting the extremely serious sit uation that has been brought about in Washington recently by the greatly increased number of applicants for relief, who no longer receive aid from the Board of Public Welfare. Bishop James E. Freeman, who has served as chairman of the committee from the time of its organization, was elected honorary chairman. The fol lowing officers were elected: Chair man, Rev. Pastor. • LENTEN LECTURES TO END MONDAY The final lecture of the Mayflower Lenten eerlee will be delivered by Dr. Albert Joseph McCartney next Mon day at 11 o’clock in the ball room of the Mayflower Hotel. His subject will be ‘‘The Moral Value of the Doc trine of the Immortality of the Soul.” These lectures have been conducted throughout the Lenten season under the general theme, ‘‘The Return to Religion.” Dr. McCartney has had assisting him in this series Bishop James Free man, who delivered the opening lec ture; Rev. Dr. Frederick Brown Harris, Foundry Methodist Church, and Dr. Oliver J. Hart, St. John’s Episcopal Church. MOBLEY MISSION SERVICES SET The services of the Mobley Mission at Columbia Heights Christian Church will continue during Holy Week with a meeting each evening.
