AIR RAIDERS BOMB

x MADRID, March 25—Insurgent
■bombers rained explosives on Madrid

attacks only when artillery batteries
.took up the battle and began to pour
shells into the beleaguered capital.
The insurgent assault began shortly
before midnight and lasted until dawn.
Z In bright moonlight, the aerial
taiders—usually single planes—circled
the city, loosing heavy bombs on the
Central districts.
Z As one plane finished its deadly
itask, another appeared to take up the

Z" Defense Swings Into Action.
, Government militiamen scoured the

droops directed a stream of anti-air
craft shells and rifle bullets at the

their lights. Occasionally a shot was
fired through a window to speed the

Huntington Mayor
Expects to Leave
Jail 6Home’ Today

HUNTINGTON, Ind., March 25.— ,
Mayor Clare W. H. Bangs, utility j
baiter and municipal electricity cham
pion. expected today to leave “home"
—a cell In the Huntington County
Jail.
That cell, not unlike those of fellow :
Inmates, was the mayor’s “home” for |
101 days In 1935 and has been his i
•’home” since July 6, 1936.
“Yes, the place does seem like
home,” the mayor said today, "but !
needless to say I shall be glad to get 1
back to my real home.”
In 1935 the mayor—slightly built, j
BOft-spoken and 47 years old—went to 1
Jail on contempt charges for violating
an injunction against extending city j
electric lines to private and commer
cial consumers. On July 6 he was !
lodged behind bars again for ignoring
a court order to disconnect some 600
consumers from the municipal lines.
Last week the mayor ordered the
private and commercial consumers
disconnected and requested release
from Jail. Special Judge Huber M.
Devoss planned to act on the request
today. I
Bangs has battled persistently for
two years to establish a municipal
utility for Huntington, but has met
defeat on every hand.
He filed in Circuit Court late yes
terday a petition for an appeal from
impeachment proceedings voted by the
City Council Monday night. Judge
Otto H. Krieg approved the petition
and gave notice to City Council mem
bers and the city clerk-treasurer.
Lawmaker Ends Lone ‘Sit-Down’
When Promised Pay Roll List

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo., March 25.
—Representative J. A. Gray listed to
day as "mileposts” of his 32-hour alt
down strike in the State Capitol:
A headache.
The intrusion of passing "drunks.”
Bothersome telephone calls.
But, most important of all, "vic
tory."
The 54-year-old physician quit his
self-imposed bread-and-water diet on
a capitol office bench late yesterday
after being promised the list he de
manded of clerical help on the As
sembly pay rolls. He said he can prove
by the list that the pay rolls have been
"padded.”
Back to the more satisfying life of
a soft bed at night and a steak
smothered with onions at meal time.
Dr. Gray put the finishing touches on
a "sit-down” diary which included
these excerpts:
Tuesday, March 23—
9:45—Protest started in House on
resolution requiring number of legis
lative employes. . . .
10—Resolution referred to unim
portant committee, where it was to
die.
10:10—Served warning on House
that I would go to the office of the
permanent scat of government and sit
until information was given.
10:20—Tqok up seat in commis
sioner's office.
10:30—Generally visitors seemed
somewhat bewildered.
10:45 to 12—Many offers from per
sons who wanted to bring me food,
beer and sandwiches, all of which 1
declined as 1 do not care for lunch
and had no intentions of breaking my
diet of bread and water. Many friends
brought cigars.
12—Dinner of bread and water . . .
As evening drew on, many expressed
the question, "Could you stay all night
on that hard bench?”

DYKSTRA ASKED TO STAY

Resignation of City

CINCINNATI, March 35.—City
Manager C. A. Dykstra was urged
today to yield to sentimental consid
erations and make his resignation
effective June 11, the seventh anni
versary of his taking office.
Dykstra has accepted the presi
dency of the University of Wisconsin
and formally notified City Council
yesterday of his action.
Mayor Russell Wilson suggested the
date and Dykstra, remaining officially
noncommittal, declared that al
though he plans to leave office May
1, he is scheduled to return for a
commencement address before gradu
ates of the University of Cincinnati
on June 11.
Confronted by a field of 29 pos
sible appointees as successor to
Dykstra, councllmen indicated pri
vately that the Intervening six weeks
might be considered as a "leave of
absence,” during which City Solicitor
John D. Ellis automatically would
serve as acting city manager.

City Council, is the new Mayor of
Hagerstown.
The Democratic candidate defeated
his Republican opponent, J. Lloyd

yesterday. He succeeds the late Dr.
Irvin M. Wertz.
