F. E. COOMBS DEAD;
NOTED AS CHEMIST
1886 Alumnus of Washington
High School Succumbs in !
Randolph, Vt.
Frank E. Coombs, prominent chem
ist and member of the class of 1886
Of the old Washington High School,
died Wednesday in Randolph, Vt.,
according to word received here.
Death followed an operation, from
which he failed to rally. Funeral
services will be held in Randolph to
morrow.
A native of Massachusetts, Mr.
Coombs came to Washington with
his parents during boyhood. After
finishing school here he took up
chemistry and was graduated from
Columbia University. Subsequently
he became a leading chemist in the
sugar industry.
rie operated sugar estates in Cuba,
Haiti, Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico,
the Hawaiian Islands and the Phil
ippines. He devised many of the
modern Improvements In the sugar
industry. Later he beame interested
in paper making, utilizing the
stumpage from cut-over forest tracts,
and in this field introduced many
innovations.
He was a member of the Chemists’
Club of New York City and numerous
other scientific bodies. He main
tained a Summer home in Randolph.

IS TAKEN BY DEATH
Wife of Beal Estate Operator Died
Wednesday—Bites Tomorrow
at 9:30 A.M.
Mrs. Mary A. Cullinane, 60, wife
of Jeremiah Cullinane, real estate
operator and retired employe of the
Bureau of Engraving and Printing,
died Wednesday after a long illness
at her home, 4616 Massachusetts
avenue.
Mrs. Cullinane, before her • mar
riage Miss Mary Agnes Reidy, was a
native of County Kerry, Ireland, but
had been a resident of Washington
or its suburbs since a youni girl. She
was married to Mr. Cullinane in 1902.
Besides her husband, she leaves four
sons, John J., Leo P., Joseph P. and
Michael R. Cullinane, and two daugh
ters, Mrs. Margaret C. Rosetta and
Miss Anne C. Cullinane all of this
city; two brothers, Cornelius Reidy,
this city, and John Reidy of Ireland,
and three sisters, Mrs . ira Kelly, this
city; Mrs. Thomas Burke and Mrs. 1
Stephen Kelly both of Ireland. She
also leaves five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be he!’ at
9:30 a.m. tomorrow in St. Ann’s Cath
olic Church, following brief services
at the residence. Burial will be in
Mount Olivet Cemetery.

Measure Permitting Appointment
of $120-Per-Month Stenog

ANNAPOLIS, April 2.—A bill em
powering the State’s attorney of
Montgomery County to appoint a
stenographer for his office at a month
ly wage of $120 was passed by the
State Assembly early today under a
liberal suspension ot rules.
The measure will be sent to Gov.
Harry W. Nice with the request that
he return to the Legislature a bill
previously adopted to allow the Mont
gomery prosecutor a stenographer
who would receive $80 a month com
pensation.
The new proposal was enacted by
amending a Senate bill lying dormanj
in a House committee and obtaining
the Senate’s concurrence in the
change. The first stenographer bill
will be brought back and allowed to
die.
