Research Work Advances Treatment, Dr. Parran Declares. Bv the Associated Press. Research work is bringing more eompjete understanding of the cause of cancer and development of more ef fective methods of treatment, Sur geon General Thomas Parran of the Public Health Service said yesterday. “I think we may be on the eve of important developments in getting at the factors which cause cancer and thereby eliminating them,” he said. That belief, he added, is inspired not by the discovery of methods of preventing cancer, but paradoxically because many chemical substances have been found which produce cancer. Some of these substances. Dr. Par ran explained, have been derived from coal tar, which long has been known to cause cancer, and are closely re lated chemically to normal constit uents of the body. This suggests, he said, that it may be possible to develop other sub stances which will retard the produc tion and growth of cancer, just as the coal tar derivatives promote growth. Scientists of the Public Health Serv ice believe the explanation of the cause of the cancer is found in changes which occur in the chemical reactions of the body. Senator Bone, Democrat, of Wash ington, and Representative Magnuson, Democrat, of Washington, asked Con gress Friday to spend $1,000,000 for ft Government cancer research pro gram. About only $500,000 annually h.as been spent on cancer research in all the laboratories of the country, Dr. Parran said. This includes the Gov ernment's expenditure of $115,000. Radiator Caps Lock.
