PAN-AMERICAN DAY
SET FOR APRIL 14
Roosevelt and Hull to Lead in
Exercises for 21
Nations.
President Roosevelt and Secretary of
State Hull will lead Pan-American
day exercises here on April 14, in
which 21 nations will participate.
During the morning the President
will deliver a message to the governing
board of the Pan-American Union,
inaugurating an observance to be gen
eral over the United States and Latin
America.
Dr. L. S. Rowe, director of the
union, said exercises will be held in
thousands of schools, clubs and pub
lic meeting places throughout the
Western Hemisphere.
Washington events include a lunch
eon to be tendered the union by the
council of the Pan-American So
ciety of New York and a program to
be presented at the union by schools
of the city.
Secretary Hull will speak over a
radio program to include Latin Amer
ican music and vocal selections by
Mme. Bldu Sayao, Brazilian soprano,
who recently made her debut with the
Metropolitan Opera Co.
Ice Pack Breaks Early.
Breaking of the ice pack in the
North Atlantic ahead of the usual
time has caused a much earlier use
of the southerly shipping rout>^ in
the Atlantic.
BALANCED BUDGET
URGED BY LEAGUE
National Economy Group Sends
Petition to Roosevelt and
Congress.
By the Associated Press.
The National Economy League yes
terday petitioned President Roosevelt
and Congress “to make a balanced
budget a reality in the coming fis
cal year."
It urged four methods of reach
ing that objective:
“That the President’s (budget) esti
mates be not Increased and, where
possible, be reduced.
'"Hiat the main responsibility for
the administration of unemployment
relief be turned back to the States
and local communities, where it
rightly belongs, with Federal grants
In aid where strictly necessary.
"That new demands on the Tress
ury by World War veterans and other
special groups be firmly resisted.
"That additional taxes be levied if
necessary, but only after all prac
ticable reductions in the expenditures
have been made—in the firm belief
that increased taxes are preferable
to continued deficits.”

When 20 convicts in a prison van
were flung into a roadway in a crash
at Pretoria, South Africa, they were
surprised that none attempted to get
away.
RABBI TO SPEAK
A meeting of the Washington
Branch of the Committee to Overcome
Religious Indifference of the United
Synagogue of America will be held at
Adas Israel Synagogue at 8 o'clock to
night. Dr. Israel Herbert Levinthal,
rabbi of the Brooklyn Jewish Center,
| will be the principal speaker.
The United Synagogue is a national
organization with over 1,200 congre
gations, sisterhoods, young people's so
cieties and men's clubs, its purpose be
ing to strengthen Jewish life.
