BRITON REPORTS GONORRHEA CURE Results Positive in 70 Per Cent of Cases, He An nounces. BY THOMAS R. HENRY. Discovery of a gonorrhea antitoxin which, experiments to date indicate, brings about a complete cure in ap proximately 70 per cent of cases, was announced by Dr. Thomas Anwyl Davies, director of London's celebrated White Chapel Clinic, before the annual conference of regional health officers at the Public Health Service Audi torium today. The announcement was hailed by physicians attending the conference as that of one of the major medical developments of recent times, per haps ranking in importance with the discovery of diphtheria and meningitis antitoxins. Up to date, the British physician, who is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on venereal dis eases, said the cures have been com plete and lasting when the antitoxin has worked at all. In about 30 per cent of the cases treated, however, there was no effect whatsoever. Some Strains Ar Immune. This anomalous result, Dr. Alwyn Davies said, probably can be explained by the fact that there are different strains of the gonnococcus, the micro scopic organism causing the disease, which are immune to the lethal action of the strains used in producing the antitoxin. This will probably be over come when the material is perfected. The antitoxin is produced by inject ing a horse with the gonnococci from a human patient. A protective action is set up in the blood ol the animal, from which the resulting remedy is obtained. From 5 to 20 cubic centimeters of the antitoxin are injected into the gonorrhea victim over a period of a week or more. Meanwhile the patient is able to continue at work. No hos pitalization period is necessary. He has been actively at work on the antitoxin for the past three years, the London physician said, but it really may be considered as a culmination of observation over 20 years of active practice. It promises to place in the hands of the medical profession com plete control over a malady which has been one of the scourges of hu manity for centuries. The disease. Dr. Alwyn-Davies said, is three or four times as prevalent in Great The antitoxin, the clue to the pro duction of which came from the success of meningococci antoxin, is effective at any stage in the process of the malady, but naturally cannot help the permanent ravages in the system which it may have caused. These are apt to be especially severe in the female. Many years may be required for the Ultimate perfection of the anti toxin, Dr. Alwyn Davies said, point ing out that after 20 years the dosage of diphtheria antitoxin is still in Question. The meningitis anti toxin, he said, now is effective in 100 per cent of all cases, and there is reason to believe that this specific against an organism of the same fam ily will be equally efficient eventually. Advantage Even Seen. The difference is that with menin gitis unless the specific is given early the patient is apt to be dead, while with gonorrhea it can be applied at any time during the active course of the disease. The control of gonorrhea must take its place with cancer, tuberculosis and acute rheumatism among the medical problems of this or any age, the con ference was told by Dr. Ambrose King, assistant medical officer of the White chapel Clinic in London. If progress is to be made in control cf the disease, he said, the right type of men must be attracted to the prob lem and the medical profession must admit its knowledge of the disease is elementary. Several hundred Federal. State and foreign public health officials are taking part in the four-day confer ence. The experts are members of the Conference of State and Provincial Health Officers of North America. General sessions today will be fol lowed by committee meetings to morrow. On Wednesday and Thursday the delegates will be guests of Dr. Thomas Parran, jr., head of the Federal serv ice. at the thirty-fifth State and Territorial Health Conference with the nurgeon general. Ruesch quoted the boy as saying he burned the building to get revenge for wrongs he fancied were done his foster parents by Overseer Wilbur | Glenn Voliva of the Christian Apos tolic Church, which operated the temple. Voliva had claimed the fire, which razed the three-story wooden struc ture last Friday, was of incendiary origin. Ruesch said Griffith made his con fession voluntarily because he feared | four innocent men were being held as arson suspects. The youth, how ever, was mistaken. Ruesch said, be ' cause no suspect had been arrested. Ruesch said the youth told him he poured kerosene on lumber stored be neath the floor of the tabernacle and lighted it. BY BLAIR BOLLES. Great Britain led the World Textile Conference today on the question of a universal 40-hour week for all textile workers, who outnumber the employes of any other industry on earth. Following urgent pleas from repre sentatives of continenal European workers for immediate adoption of the 40-hour week, Anthony J. Murr head, British government delegate, proposed to smother the movement under a demand for discussion of technical questions and for “fuller presentation of the facts.” The Englishman had no sooner taken his seat than Victor Vandeputte, outspoken secretary of the Textile Workers’ Federation of France, de manded immediate adoption of a reso lution favoring the 40-hour week. Clothers Unclothed, Is Claim. “If any delegate has anything to say, let him say it now so we can devote our time to technical discussion.” Murrhead told the delegates of 24 countries. "No one will wish unduly to pursue a course of forever demanding additional information. On the other hand, no one should feel impelled into agreeing to a line of action on data which to him seem insufficient or in conclusive.” The American worker delegate. Emil Rieve, president of the American Fed eration of Hosiery Workers, who said of the textile industry that “the irony lies in the fact that those who clothe the world are themselves unclothed," voiced disagreement wdth Murrhead. Joined with Vandeputte and Rieve in the 40-hour week movement were Alphonse Segier of Belgium and Anton “Arthritis Stiffens My Joints!” tne tetter says . . . ior i am suffering the torments of j acidity.” Don't allow aches and pains to settle in your very bones. Segier, who opened the drive for the 40-hour week, said: "The textile industry is one in which the two shift system can be most easily ap plied. Indeed, according to the ex isting international conventions and legislation of the many countries, it Is possible for women and young per sons to be employed at any time be tween 5 a.m. and 10 p.m. "Many textile workers, moreover, have to travel 2, 4, 6 or even more miles to get to their work. Conse quently, if a two-shift system is being worked, many women and young per sons have to leave their homes at 4 in the morning in order to be at work at 5 o’clock, which is the earliest hour at which their employment is permitted. This is surely a strong argument for giving priority to the textile industry when applying the 40 hour week." The 40-hour-weck is desirable on social, economic, moral and political grounds, as well as from the stand point of population, Roscher said. Ancient Resort Found.
