Pioneer Designer Surprises Industry—Would Use New “Super-Clipper/' BV JOSEPH S. EDGERTON. Glenn L. Martin, aviation pioneer end builder of such famous types of airplanes as the giant clipper flying boats now flying the Pacific and the Army B-10 bombardment planes which have been making military history for three years, today filed with the Com merce Department informal notice of his intention to establish a non-stop trans-Atlantic air transport service. Martin signified his intention of go ing into the ocean service, in competi tion with Pan-American Airways and British Imperial Airways, now pre paring to establish joint service be tween the United States and England. For this service, Martin notified Assistant Secretary of Commerce J. Monroe Johnson, he has designed the world’s largest transport flying boat. This giant aircraft will be capable of carrying 40 passengers, 5,000 pounds of mail, express and light cargo and fuel sufficient for 5.000 miles of non stop flight. Thus would give a range 1.500 miles greater than the great circle route across the Atlantic, he said. Less Than 19 Hours. This "super-clipper" would have an average speed of 175 miles per hour at only 53'- per cent of its total en gine power. Martin informed Col. Johnson. Such a cruising speed would permit eastbound service from the United States to continental Europe In 18 hours and 45 minutes and west bound service, against the prevailing Winds, in 21 hours. Martin, who now is president of the Glenn L. Martin Co., w hich oper ates a large airplane construction plant near Baltimore, said that he is organizing another company to han dle the ocean air transport service and that in the near future he expects bins company to become a factor in the rapidly developing trans-Atlantic Bir transportation picture. Last week Col. Johnson sent to the Canadian government a letter ap proving the designation of New York and Montreal as bases for the joint Fan-American-Imperial service. Pan American Airways now is building al ternative "bad-weather bases" at Bal timore and Charleston, S. C. Ships Ready to Pioneer. Imperial Airways has a large ocean type flying boat at Bermuda in readi ness to undertake experimental opera tion to New' York and Montreal and has two sister ships, one at a trans Atlantic base established in Ireland near the mouth of the River Shannon end the other in England. These two ehips are soon to pioneer the northern route to Canada and the United States. Pan-American ana imperial are planning alternative routes, one by way of Iceland, Greenland and New foundland and the other by way of the Azores and Bermuda. Martin's decision to enter the ocean transport field came as a surprise here. Although Martin has been a world leader in aviation since about 1915, this will be his first large venture In the field of airplane operations. Martin’s fame was gained as an airplane designer and builder and he has produced virtually every type of Army, Navy and commercial aircraft during his long career. His noted Martin bomber of the late World War period was the standard bombardment airplane of the Army for many years and was used in such operations as the sinking of the surrendered German battleship Ostfriesland and smaller ships in tests which were in part re sponsible for the controversy which tore the Army and Navy and resulted In the court-martial trial of the late Brig. Gen William Mitchell. B-10 Bomber Makes History, His more recent B-10 bomber, the first of the new' high-speed types which have resulted in rewriting of the tac tics of the Army Air Corps end estab lishing of the bombardment type as the backbone of the Nation's air de fenses, also has figured In many notable achievements. Ten of these new' Martin’s made history in the round-trip flight from Washington to Alaska led by Brig. Gen Henry H. Arnold. More recently they have par ticipated In one-stop formation flights from Langley Field, Va., to Panama and return. Two squadrons of these ships now have made the Panama cruise. Three Martin clippers now are being operated by Pan-American Airways across the Pacific from San Francisco to Hong Kong, China. They are four engined aircraft, with a wing span of about 130 feet and are the largest ever built. The Pacific clippers, however, will be dwarfed by the new giant designed by Martin for the Atlantic service. The assembly section of the Martin plant now is being enlarged to permit construction of the new ships, details of which have not yet been made public. SANTOS, Brazil, April 5 OP).— Twenty-nine passengers aboard a Miami-bound Pan-American clipper were brought, safely to shore last night when rough weather forced the plane down off this port. Heavy waves damaged the plane's rudder and prevented the pilot from taxiing to shore. Police launches took off the passengers, crew and mail, and the plane later was beached without damage. The clipper was expected to continue toward Rio de Janeiro today. Mother and Daughter Killed in Los Angeles—Fin gerprints Found. ff» the Associated Press. LOS ANGELES, April 5.--Smudgy fingerprints and the outline of a man's foot speeded police search today for the brickbat killer who crushed the skulls of Mrs. Edna A. Worden, 48, W. P. A. worker, and her 12-year-old daughter, Marguerite Estelle. It was the sixth case since January of brickbat assaults against women here. Mother and daughter were slain early Sunday morning in their small Hillside apartment, a block from the rumble of downtown Los Angeles traffic. Apparently neither victim was criminally attacked. Autopsy Surgeon A. P. Wagner said. The mother's purse was on the floor, turned inside out. Bureau drawers and a letter file had been strewn about. The killer struck each victim at least four times with the brick. Dis ordered bedclothing indicated Mrs. Worden had struggled desperately. Until yesterday, the most brutal brickbat case here this year was the slaying of Mrs. Rose G. Valdez, 20, near the crib of her baby, March 2. A bloodstained brick was found in a wastebasket. The killer eluded cap ture. Four other women in recent weeks have been beaten with bricks by a mysterious assailant. Detectives said the killer of the Wordens entered through a kitchen window after stealthily removing his size 11 shoes. Plaster casts of his footprints showed the w’ool fibers of his socks. —-9 ..»• Canada-Mexico Road Longest.
