Police Trace Activities of Three Youths With Whom He “Shot It Out.” Marked improvement was reported today in the condition of Detective John A. Caton as his brother officers continued to trace the past activities of three youths whom he “shot it out w-ith” Tuesday night in an ice cream store hold-up. Caton, hero of a gun fight with a member of the Tri-State Gang three years ago, spent a “good night” at Walter Reed Hospital, where he is confined with four bullet wounds. Lewis Knight, 18, of 1404 Columbia road, one of the alleged bandits, who was wounded by Caton during an ex change of fire in the High ice cream store at 806 Upshur street, is still in a critical condition. He is in Emer gency Hospital with a lung wound. Brother Recovering. Lewis’ brother, William Knight, 17, was reported recovering in Gallinger Hospital from a chest wound. Neither the Knights nor Ferguson Thiebolt, 19, and Robert Sands, 21, also held in connection with a series of robberies, have been charged. Arraigned today in Police Court on a charge of receiving stolen prop erty, John J. Simpson, 29, of 2133 G street, who, according to Capt. Ira E. Keck, admitted buying cigarettes, candy and other articles from the youths, was ordered held for the grand jury. Simpson pleaded not guilty and waived preliminary hear ing. His bond was fixed at $500. Police are checking on 13 robberies, all but four of them in the District, which Capt. Keck says the four youths have been linked with. The youths, however, Keck explained, did not work as a "gang” in all of the crimes. Promotion Awaits Caton. Maj. Ernest W. Brown, police su perintendent, indicated today a pro HUSKIES! the NEW whole wheat flakes! motion, probably a detective ser geantcy, awaits Caton on his recovery. In 1934, Caton shot and killed Wil liam B. Phillips, a member of the tri State gang. Commissioner George E. Allen an nounced yesterday a $250 check, from an anonymous donor, had been sent to him for presentation to Caton’s family. The Knight brothers, Thiebolt and Sands, a taxi driver, probably will be placed in a headquarters line-up within the next 48 hours in an effort to Identify them with other crimes.
