NEW YORK, April 12.—New York Central Railroad Co. reported Feb ruary net income, after fixed charges, of $1,021,716, equal to 20 cents a share on outstanding capital stock. For February last year ther«4toas a deficit of $548,876. EXPECTEDTO SOAR Recent Substantial Gains | to Widen, Shippers' Boards Predict. By the Associated Press. NEW YORK, April 12.—Indica tions that recent sharp rises in goods hauled by railroads are exported by carrier experts to accelerate in com ing months were given by estimates of second quarter traffic, announced by the Atlantic States Shippers Advisory Board. This organization of industrial traf fic men, which has its counterpart in other regions throughout the country, has as its purpose advising the Car riers on probable equipment require ments necessary to handle shippers’ business. The board calculated a general in crease in volume of carlot shipments for the April to June period of this year at 4 per cent in excess of the same period last year, with many indi vidual classifications of freight show ing much wider advantages over the like period of 1936. An outstanding characteristic of the predicted shipping totals was the wide improvement apparently expected in materials for Spring building. One of the greatest gains predicted was for cement, where the board sug gested movement would be 25 to 33 % per cent ahead of the preceding year. Other building materials with esti mated additions over a year ago were lime, 15 per cent; lumber, 9 per cent; roofing materials, 18 per Vent; crushed stone, sand and slag, 10 per cent. Expected decreases were few in number and generally included freight which was affected by special influ ences. Coal and coke shipments were expected to be 5 per cent less than a year ago because an unusually mild Winter left dealers with large stocks on hand. A short crop in New York State led to predictions movement of potatoes would decline 10 per cent from 1936. Some agricultural freight was ex pected, however, to show wide margins of gain, including the transfer of strawberries from New Jersey, esti mated up 100 per cent, and of the same fruit from Maryland, where 33 per cent more was thought likely to be moved. NEW YORK, April 12.—Freight car loadings of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway for 1936 increased 11.5 per cent over 1935, and the aver age revenue per car was $4.45 more, J. T. Bledsoe, president, said In his annual report to stockholders today. Discontinuance of emergency freight charges the first of the year will tend to lower earnings per car in 1937, he said, but this will be at least partially offset by an increase in transconti nental rates already authorized. As previously reported, net Income was placed at $9,998,125, equal after preferred dividend requirements to $1.56 a share on the common stock. » NEW YORK BANK STOCKS NEW YORK.
