In the Hunt Country Activities Among the Horse-Lovers of Virginia and Maryland. BY NINA CARTER TABB. RIGHT yellow circles and bor ders of jonquils, blooming forsythia bushes banked against stone walls and the green grass of the Glenwood course at Middleburg called for warm sun shine on Saturday. But dark clouds hung over the Blue Ridge Mountains, the wind was raw and cold and there were flurries of snow. So only the hardiest of horse lovers stayed to see all of the six races of the Middleburg Hunt race meeting. There were about 6,000 spectators on hand for the opening race, but after the second, the feature race of the day, the Middleburg Cup, many Just couldn’t "take It,” and left or went and sat in closed cars. A few didn’t seem to mind the cold and stood on the hillside to watch the best card of race* ever held there. The Middleburg Cup was exciting to watch, as you couldn’t tell which of the two leading horses would win until they were over the last fence. First one and then the other took the lead as they circled the 4-mile course. Jack Skinner, riding Welboume Jake, owned by Paul Mellon, came in to win just ahead of Bobby Davis on Indigo, owned by John Schiff. George Ohrstrom's Nicias was third. The Rose Hill, the other timber race, was won by Frost Cake, owned by Robert Young, trained by Jack Bkinner and given a wonderful ride by Randy Duffey. Gerard Smith’s Sun Faun, trained by Arthur White and ridden by Louie Stoddard, was second, and Gerard Warburg’s Infla tion, trained by Turner Wiltshire end ridden by James McCormick, was third. Jack Skinner, riding Freddy War burg’s Dual Control, had the only accident of the day in this race, fall ing and Injuring his shoulder. He was taken to Winchester Hospital in an ambulance for treatment. Jim Ryan had three of his horses In training win, Mrs. Lewis A. Park’s Royal Thomas winning the opening race over hurdles: Donald Ross’ Ra dient Rowley winning the William Skinner Memorial, the third event, 2tj miles over brush, and J. C. Brady, jr.’s Crooning Water, ridden by Sid ney Watters, winning the Loudoun Plate, fifth race, 2 miles over brush. rT,HE last race of the day was the most exciting Not more than a thousand seasoned sportsmen were left to see George Garrett’s entry, Bonnie Chatter, trained by Dion Kerr and ridden by Mike Kerr, come romp ing home in front of 11 entries in the Three Oaks, a mile on the flat. Bonnie Chatter, by Chatterton Bonnie Mom, is a bay mare well known in the hunting field, but this wras her first race. She is owned and has been ridden to hounds by Miss Emily North King of Warrenton, and it was hard to tell which was the most excited—George Garrett of Washington, starting the racing game for the first time this season, having his entry win sensationally, or Miss King seeing her hunter win her first race. Every one trying to get a warm fire side, made the race of getting away from the course, a hard one to win. Good cheer and hospitality was wait ing at many a household. Mrs. Ray mond Belmont and Miss Winnifred Maddux were entertaining and their house was soon filled with guests. Mrs. Amory Perkins, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Iselin and Miss Charlotte Noland had many to stop in, as did the Frosts and Sands. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Skinner gave a delightful party with delicious food and drinks. Jack got back from the hospital in the midst of the excite ment and was surrounded by the Jockeys as he explained his fall and Injury. Another gay party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Paul Llewellyns. Many dinner parties were given for visitors that night. Mrs. Henry T. Oxnard entertained for her son-in-law and daughter, Baron and Baroness D'Epremesnil. Among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. Houghton Metcalf and their house guests, Mr. and Mrs. Merryman of Providence, R. I.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Baird, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cushman, Mrs. Crosby Miller, Mrs. Ayres Starr, and her guest, Miss Martha Wilson of England, Miss Win nifred Maddux, George Burwell, Prank (f MOTHER'S DAY IS KfcSUNDAY —MAY 9 Jj riour Mother Wants Your f Photograph» HAVE IT TAKEN BY OUR EXPERT PHOTOGRAPHER {Mother's Day Special 8S 3.. The luncheon given by Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. V. Cushman at 12 o'clock, before the races, was attended by many guests. Mr. and Mrs. Richard K. Mellon of Pittsburgh are visiting Mr. and Mrs. Plunket Stewart at their farm near The Plains during the races, the last of which will take place on Wednesday. Six races will be run then, and it promises to be as good a day of sport as Saturday and perhaps warmer.
