NURSE TO TESTIFY
AT HE’S TRIAL
“Night of Horror” Will Be
Described by Evangelist’s
Confidante.

LOS ANGELES, April 15.—Nurse
Ella Nordeen, confidante of Aimee
Semple McPherson, was called to the
witness stand today to tell her version
of the evangelist's self-termed "night
of horror” in a Phoenix, Ariz., hotel
last year.
That night, Friday, the 13th of
March, has become a pivotal sequence
in the $150,000 slander suit brought
against W. Andrews, Angelus Temple
attorney, by Roberta Semple, daugh
ter of Mrs. McPherson.
Mrs. McPherson testified that Ro
berta, her daughter and another at
torney, Jacob Moidel, threatened her
Into signing four contracts in Phoenix,
two of which gave them certified posi
tions in the temple.
Mrs. McPherson insisted the only
reason she gave Moidel any legal work
was "to please Roberta," who "had
fallen in love with Mr. Moidel.”
Subsequently, Roberta left the tem
ple. Her attorneys contend she was
expelled by her mother. Roberta filed
the slander suit against Andrews, de
claring he said she was driven out for
trying to “blackmail” Aimee.
To all these things Mrs. McPherson
has said Ella Nordeen, sturdy Swedish
nurse, was a witness.
The evangelist was admonished by
Superior Judge Clarence Kincaid on
one occasion to refrain from address
ing off-the-record answers to him.

Priest Reports Theft at St.
Stephen's Church.
Robbery of the poor box at St.
Stephen’s Catholic Church, Twenty
fifth street and Pennsylvania avenue,
was reported to police today by the
Rev. George B. Harrington.
The theft, which involved an un
known amount of change, took place
last night. Two white boys, about 13,
are being sought. •

EOR MEMORIAL HIT
American University Park
Citizens See Me; '.ce ,
to Blossoms.
Placing the proposed Jefferson
Memorial in the Tidal Basin area was
opposed last night by the American
University Park Citizens’ Association
as a detraction from the beauty of the
cherry blossoms.
Vincent B. Smith, author of the
measure, urged any member who might
retain his vote in one of the States
to urge his Representatives and Sena
tors in Congress to oppose the pro
posed memorial.
Funds in the 1938 District supply
bill providing for a sidewalk on
Forty-ninth street from Massachusetts
to Western avenues will be sought.
Truck Traffic Plan Approved.
The plan of Traffic Director William
A. Van Duzer to route all heavy truck
and bus through traffic over certain
streets was Indorsed In principle In
another measure approved. A letter
from Van Duzer Informed the group
traffic near their area would be routed
by way of Wisconsin avenue. River
road and Nebraska avenue.
Citing the Increasing number of
accidents during the past two years,
Paul Andrews, chairman, Traffic Com
mittee, asked for stop signs at the
Intersection of Forty-sixth and Brandy
wine streets. Both are through streets,
he declared, and one should be given
the right of way over the other at
this point. Members indorsed his
resolution.
A letter from Samuel J. Flickinger,
president Friendship Citizens’ As
sociation was read asking for co
operation in forming a proposed boys’
club. L. T. Savage, president, was
elected delegate to a meeting to dis
cuss the plan and Smith was named
co-delegate.
The group asked that the banks
along sides of Fort Bayard Park be
sodded or protected in some suitable
way from further erosion.
H. W. Snape, of the Goodwill In
dustries, explained the activities of
this charity group and appealed tor
support in its work. The meeting was
held in Hurst Hall of American Uni
versity, with Savage presiding.

Spalding Council Dinner-Dance
to Mark 38th Year.
Spalding Council, Knights of Co
lumbus, will celebrate its thirty
eighth anniversary with a dinner
dance next Thursday night at the
Club Troika.
Thomas J. Troddert, general chair
man of the Arrangements Commltte,
announced today that William O. Mc
Guire will have charge of reservations.
