(Compiled by the Associated Press.) Bs the Associated Press. NEW YORK, May 1 .—The bond market rode an even course today with most, of the narrow swings fa voring higher values. A moderate demand for rails pro vided a number of gains ranging from fractions to a point. Other corporate groups were quieter, showing minor variations from previous closings. U. S. Governments rested on their recent improvement within a small range. , With recovery of equilibrium, fol lowing unsettlement earlier in the tveek, the market appeared to be re flecting improved sentiment based on estimates of high banking authorities that excess reserves would amount to 8850,000,000 after banking adjustments incident to the May 1 increase in de posit reserve requirements. This level, it was pointed out, would far exceed what had been previously forecast, and furthermore, it was indi cated the excess reserves would be fairly evenly distributed throughout the country. Bonds of Santa Pe. Baltimore & Ohio, St. Paul, Rock Island, Erie, Great Northern, Illinois Central and ' Nickel Plate led the modest upturn. Other gainers included Bethlehem Steel 4’4s, U. S. Rubber 5s and West ern Union 5s. --• < Washington Exchange • SALES—AFTER CALL. Norfolk & Washington Steamboat Co. —3 at 108. Security Storage Co.—5 at 125.
