TO BE EXHIBITED Display Being Arranged Scientific Assembly Open ing Tomorrow. Some of nature's meanest tricks on folks living in Washington and vi cinity will be shown in an exhibit be ing arranged for the annual scientific assembly of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia, which opens tomorrow. They are the disbalances of secre tions from the endocrine glands which result in dwarfs, bearded women, adult “Infants” and extremely fat persons. The exhibit is being ar ranged by Drs, J. Kotz, Elizabeth Par ker, Harry S. Douglas and B. W. Richwine, all associated with the endocrine clinic of George Washing ton University, where some notable advances have been made in the past few years in the treatment of such cases. Duplicates of practically all the pitiful cases of the circus side shows have passed through the clinic, and in many instances have been material ly helped. The exhibit will be devoted mainly to those deficiencies in en docrine secretion which result in changes in body form, especially the pathological "fatnesses.” Cases of Dwarfism. Three cases of dwarfism, resulting from different causes, will be included. One resulted from a deficiency in thyroid secretion. It is that of a 19 year-old girl, 4 feet tail and with the mentality of a 2-year-old. In this case the stunting is general. A sec ond is the case of achondroplastic dwarfism, the type usually found in circuses. The cause is not exactly known, but is believed to be a defi ciency of some one of the pituitary hormones. The growth of this girl, who is of normal mentality, was en tirely regular except in one respect— thS long bones of the body. Thus, she Is left with extremely short arms and legs. Anotner case is tnat of the adult infant, a girl of 22, normal mentally, though physically she has never passed early childhood. She is only 4 feet tall. She looks like a big doll. The voice and the body form have never undergone the changes asso ciated with adolescence. This condi tion is believed to be due to a defi ciency in the secretion of the anterior pituitary in early life. Still another case is that of the woman who must shave every day. The cause of this is not precisely un derstood, but is believed to be due to some disfunction of the secretions from either the adrenal glands or the ovaries. Treatment of Fat Persons. Some of the best results from treat ment have been obtained in the cases of abnormally fat persons. Extreme fleshiness may result from under secretion of the thyroid, the pituitary or the sex glands. Each results in a different type of fatness. The exhibits being arranged for the assembly include demonstrations of the use of some of the newest devices in medicine and surgery and of patho logical conditions found in local hos pitals. They will be accompanied by For Her Ear Alone In Spring a young bear's fancy, too, apparently turns to ' thoughts of romance—and just like other young people, he finds a swimming pool just the place for courtship. Of course, this may be just a “Spring cleaning” at the Washington Zoo. How ever, Buddy Bruin seems to have made his romantic choice and doesn’t care if the roorld knows it. —A. P. Haggard of Yale University will speak on “Medi cine and the Public.” Dr. Haggard has a national reputation as a speaker on medical topics to lay audiences. Fish Caught in Road. S. W. Barrett, a coffee merchant in the "Mountains of the Moon" district of Uganda, had a pleasant and un expected addition to his breakfast re cently, he told friends he visited in Nairobi, Kenya, Africa. One of his native employes asked him if he had dropped any fish in the road. He said "No,” and explained that there could be no fish there because the nearest lake was 80 miles away. But 40 yards from his kitchen he found two fish, weighing 3 pounds. Although battered, they were fresh. Approval of compulsory semi-an nual inspection of automobiles in the District was voted at the final meet ing of the season of the Michigan Park Citizens’ Association last night in the Bunker Hill School. It was felt that such a requirement is necessary “to relieve unsafe driving conditions,” according to President John J. Hurley. A reiterative stand was taken to change recent bus rerouting from Tenth to Ninth back to Tenth street. Incidents where residents of the com munity have been “unpleasantly ap proached" by "panhandlers” and “af fronting people" in the lower Ninth street area were cited, as well as traffic elays from ”5 to 15 minutes pJumt MTNML m MERCHANTS TRANSFER-STORAGE CO. flO-122 | JTmiT N.W. The com mittee on this project, comprised of John Hurley, Joseph Parkhlll and Mrs. William Leonard, reports that larger accommodations are needed, since the present school enrolls 110 pupils totaling nine separate classes, which occupy two rooms and a con verted corridor. It was pointed out that the building is 32 years old, “hence not up to the standards of modem educational facilities."
