Nature’s Children
June.
BY LILLIAN COX ATHEY.
UNE has been called the month
of abundance. The flower of
the month is the wild honey
suckle. The fragrant wildrose
to be found blooming at this time,
climbing fences, walls and old build
ings in the country, is by the vote of
the American people, our National
flower.
Look where we will as we walk
Outdoors we find beautiful flowers, a
riot of color, blending of exquisite
odors that float to us on every
breeze, a delicate perfume.
We want first of all to visit our
old haunts where we can find the
flowers that arrive in June. The
bluebells, lady's thimble, iris, black
eyed susan, daisy fields—in remote
places the showy lady’s slipper, the
columbines, jack-in-pulpits, butter
cups, bluets and oh, so many others
you have met in this column and in
your favorite hills, meadows, woods
and swamps.
June is the month of bird nests
ftnd babies. In the orchards the
orchard oriole and blue bird do police
duty for the trees. Have you ever
thought how little fruit we wx>uld
have if our bird friends did not build
in the orchard and raise their grub
ftnd worm-loving infants there?
Along the stream walls look for
the homes of the cave-dwellers, the
kingfisher babies. Also watch for the
parents as they go fishing for tiny, ten
der fish for their hungry youngsters.
Then go to the meadows to see if
you can find the lovely roofed nest of
the bobwhite. Perhaps you had
better plan an early morning call so
you can hear his clear whistle.
Father bobwhite is an ideal husband.
He takes entire charge of the first
group of children, and there may be
ft dozen or more! While his' wife is
brooding another sizable family, he
Is instructing the first children in the
fascinating rules of living and dodging
foe*.
Baby orioles climb from their nurT
ery and look about with great interest.
Unlike other bird babies, they have
seen the-world until now from behind
ft latticed window.
The mourning dove calls in minor
key to her mate. She Is sitting upon
a platform of twigs, keeping two white
eggs warm. Perhaps you may see one
of the parents return from foraging
and be amaaed to see the babies
thrust their heads into their parent’s
throat for the pre-digested food they
need.
You will find the bobblink in the
meadows. He loves to sway back and
forth from the stems of tall plants like
the meadow rue.
In raspberry bushes you may j
spy a nest of tiny warblers. He
calls "withchity-withchity-wipch,” and
whichever bush his small spouse is
located in. you may peep into and
pass swiftly by.
Along the roadways in the brush
borderd paths leading into the woods,
the Maryland yellow-throat has been
known to raise her family.
The animal babies are venturing
forth, too—squirrels, chipmunks, rac
coons, skunks, and others too numer
ous to mention. Check on your
scrapbook.
Catalpa trees are abloom with their
handsome flowers of lavender and
deep purple. The air is filled with

tion and analysis.

the perfume from the honey locust
and wildcherry. Wild strawberries
are ripe in sunny meadows and even
along the roadsides.
Butterflies, like jeweled flowers, are
floating from flower to flower. Insects
fill the air with a steady hum, as they
feast on nectar. Over the fields of
clover, bumble bee queens are doing
a valuable service for the farmer and
his cattle by transporting pollen from
the clover heads. Incidentally, each
queen is drinking all the nectar she
can, for hidden away in some cosy
retreat, she will build her own honey
pot and wax incubator.
The streams, ponds, brooks, bogs and
rivers are filled with the new gener
ation of fish of this year. Not a spot
in these places is without its thrill for
the nature lover.
June is a grand month to seek your
own sacred and thrilling moments
among the outdoor folks every day
you can.

CHICAGO.—When a burglar en
tered his apartment, Capt. H. Wirt
Butler of the Illinois National Guard
was concentrating on a bridge game
and failed to notice the Intruder,
police reported. However, the thief
must have suffered a nervous attack
later, they said, for in his loot were
several medals won by Capt. Butler’s
marksmanship.
