CONTACT IS MADE i Communication Is Estab lished Between Russian Explorers and Moscow. A correspondent of the Moscow newspaper, Izvcstia, tells here of the activities of the Soviet expedition at the North Pole, where an airplane and scientific base has been es tablished. BY HAROLD DENNY. By Wireless to The Slar. MOSCOW, June 1 < N.A.N.A.'i.— Direct telephonic communication was established last night between the North Pole, where the Soviet govern ment has established a scientific base, and Moscow, via Dickson Island. Al though a blizzard was raging on Dick son Island, the conversation instituted was as follows: Moscow: "This is Moscow, the radio center of the great northern sea route. Tune in. We start counting, one, two, three, four, eight, ten. Tune in.” North Pole: "This is radio station BV of Vodopyanov's plane, U. S. S. R. N-170. Tune in. We start counting, one, two, three, five, ten.” Volume Reported Perfect. Moscow: “North Pole! North Pole! ! Moscow speaking. We hear you well. { The volume Is perfect, but not clear enough. We are again tuning in.” | North Pole: “Hello. Moscow! North1 Pole speaking. Moscow, you are not 1 hearing us well on account of the noise of the motor. We will take the micro- ' phone outside and speak to you again at 11:15 p.m. Do you agree?” Moscow: “Hello, North Pole! We hear you and' agree to your proposal. We will resume the conversation at 1115 p.m. We are awaiting the con versation with impatience.” Communication Re-Established. When communication was later re established, the following conversation took place: North Pole: “Please call Yanson and Bergavinov (political chief of the' Great Northern Sea Route) to the microphone. How well do you hear us° Krenkel is making a test. We will now start receiving. All members of the expedition, including Otic Schmidt, are at the microphone.” Moscow: “Yanson-at the micro phone Warm greetings to all mem- j bers of the expedition to the North 1 Pole. Not only our country but all progressive humanity is w atching your remarkable feats with great atten- ■ tion. All the Soviet and foreign press ere full of descriptions of your heroic deeds and outstanding successes in the struggle for further progress for science. We are impatiently await ing the moment of joyous reunion in i Moscow. Good-by, dear friends.” North Pole: "On behalf of all members of the expedition we thank j you for your greetings. We are in- ! finitely happy to have justified the1 trust of Comrade Stalin, the party and the government.” Greetings From Families. Moscow: "Bergavinov at the mic rophone. Warm greetings to all mem bers of the expedition. I am glad to give you regards from your fam ilies. Otto Yulevich (Schmidtt, I Just talked to Vera Feodorovna tSchmidt's wife). She has just ar rived from a rest home. Greetings from wife and children to Vodopyanov. Shevelev, your son Volodya wishes to tell you that he is passing his school examinations successfully. We are i having cold weather in Moscow, and the latest joke is that you have opened the doors to the North Pole and for gotten to close them." Every one in this North Pole camp Is working like a trojan. The me- i chanics are preparing the planes for b return to Rudolf Island. Scientists of the permanent party are buried in their observations. They are busy also sorting and placing supplies and equipment. Last night we heard a beautiful concert from Moscow. We listened to the concert in three "auditoriums” —the cabins of three airplanes in . tvhich the whole polar population sis- . sembled and received the broadcast on short wave. Audibilitv was good.
