AID IN FORD DRIVE Showdown Near in Probe of Beating of Union Organizers. By the Associated Press. DETROIT, June 1.—Promised aid from the Committee for Industrial Organization figured today in the cur rently delayed drive of the United Automobile Workers of America to Unionize the Ford Motor Co. Homer Martin, union president, an nounced that John L. Lewis, C. I. O. chieftain, had telegraphed him assur ance of "every assistance" from the auto workers' parent body in the campaign. The message reached Martin even as a showdown impended in the pro jected investigation of Wayne County authorities into last Wednesday's bloody fist fights in which union or ganizers were beaten off Ford property. In the telegram Lewis branded the "attack by agents of the Ford Co.” upon union representatives, who at the time sought to distribute hand bills advocating union membership, as a "most flagrant outrage.” Witnesses Demanded. Prosecutor Duncan McCrea, threat ening "further steps” unless his de mands are met, had given the Ford Co. and Dearborn city officials until today to produce witnesses to the fight. Neither has indicated assent. The "attack," Lewis said, will be “resented by every member of or ganized labor and every thoughtful citizen.” "Such demonstrations,” he said, "indicate the paramount necessity of comprehensive organization of the workers in Ford plants and other units of major undustries. "It will serve to Intensify the de sire of the workers to enroll in or ganizations associated with the C. I. O. "The C. I. O. will give every as sistance to the law and its mem bers to carry on and to establish col lective bargaining in the plants of the Ford Co." Heavy holiday traffic prevented Martin from securing airplane passage for Washington early today to con fer with Lewis over Ford campaign plans. He planned to leave either late today or postpone the trip. The Ford Organization Committee will meet tomorrow to pame a date for a second attempt to distribute pamphlets among Ford employes. Prosecutor McCrea did not disclose what "further steps" he would take if the Ford Co. and Dearborn City offi cials decline to comply with his de mand for oo-operation. He has an nounced that warrants would issue if the identity of men who assaulted un ion leaders, one of whom carried a permit for the distribution of the pam phlets, could be established satisfac torily. The prosecutor said that by nightfall Mayor John L. Carey of Dearborn and Harry Bennett, Ford personnel direc tor, would have had ‘'sufficient time to comply with my request for wit nesses.” "If I don’t get their co-operation by that time." he added, “I have other plans in mind.” Bennett, who received the prose cutor's request, said the Ford Co. had violated no law. He suggested McCrea investigate “the extent the U. A. W. A. violated the law1 in trespassing on private property.” ■---—•-— Germany’s shortage of raw materials is reported to be serious. 1937 "SUPER DUTY" FRIGIDAIRE Wi™ THE METER-MISER /Frigidaire offers a" 5 Basic Services for Complete Home URefrigerationj NO MONEY DOWN S. BROOKS VILLE, Fla., June 1—Flor ida's lost Sea Island cotton is coming back sinoe entomologists learned to cater to the boll weevil's thirst. Sea Island cotton acreage has in creased from about 3,000 in 1936 to 20,000 in 1937—all because the weevil can’t resist the tempting "afternoon tea" prepared for him. It's a poisoned sirup mixture, and it’s getting results. The Works Progress Administration attempted rehabilitation of Sea Island cotton successfully two years ago in Madison County and the program has been extended to other sections. An improved method of weevil con trol was necessary, as the Sea Island bolls are soft and susceptible to In jury. The control method would have to eradicate completely the initial in festation. With the use of calcium arsenate and sirups, Hernando County Agent B. E. Lawton said practically all adult weevils in the field may be killed within a few hours. Cotton growers merely push a mop dipped in the mixture through the tops of the plants and wait for the weevil to get thirsty. Sea Island cotton, grown only in North Florida and Southwestern Geor gia, is in demand, particularly in Eu rope. The Florida crop this year may total 5,000 bales, and growers believe 100,000 bales could be sold at fancy prices. Psychic Message Council IIOO Twelfth St. N.W.
